Notes and quotes before tonight's game (game to start at 7:30)

We've had lots of activity here today with Chris Parmelee being placed on the taxi squad, Jonathan Schoop working out and preparing to start his injury rehab assignment Friday at Double-A Bowie, third baseman Manny Machado being named the American League's Player of the Week and reliever Wesley Wright finally leaving extended spring training.

Wright, on the disabled list with a strained left trapezius muscle, will pitch one inning Tuesday at Triple-A Norfolk.

The Orioles want to take a good look at Parmelee, who could have opted out of his minor league contract later today. He's taking batting practice today and will be added to the 25- and 40-man rosters on Tuesday. Space must be created on both rosters.

Chris Parmelee Orioles spring.jpgParmelee is batting .312/.381/.444 with 13 doubles, six home runs and 32 RBIs in 61 games at Norfolk. He's a career .249/.317/.392 hitter in 273 major league games spread over parts of four seasons.

"We have first dibs," said manager Buck Showalter. "We like him. He's having as good a year as anybody in Triple-A, for our team and for the other teams. He's played the outfield well and first base. He can do a lot of things. He has options to go play in the big leagues somewhere else, I would imagine. I'm not 100 percent sure of that. A lot of people tell you things that they may not really have in their hand, depending on who the agent is."

Showalter joked about being able to carry an extra player by adding Parmelee.

"Since they kind of stuck it to us with the 24, they're going to let us go 26 for a while. I was hoping," he said.

Schoop took ground balls before batting practice.

"That was encouraging. That was fun to watch," Showalter said. "He looks good. He should. He was pretty excited to get out of there."

Schoop will continue working out with the Orioles before reporting to the Baysox on Friday, assuming there are no setbacks.

"He's got a lot of at-bats," Showalter said. "Just getting underneath the lights and see what's going on. The last thing he had to get over was the decel, to feel comfortable decelerating."

A rehab assignment for a position player can last up to 20 days.

"Do I think he'll need the whole time?" Showalter said. "If he's good these four days and the first couple days in Bowie are good, I don't think he'll need that much. Basing it off Richie (Bancells), Brady (Anderson) and Jon, of course. But we're not going to activate him until we're 100 percent sure. And let the doctors sign off on it, not some manager that wants Jonathan Schoop back on the field."

The Orioles considered adding a fresh bullpen arm today before deciding to stick with the current group of relievers.

"Tyler (Wilson), the efficiency of his pitches, he could be available shortly," Showalter said. "I'd like to give one of our guys another day in the bullpen, but we'll see how the game develops. Brian (Matusz) is fine."

Center fielder Jaylen Ferguson, the Orioles' ninth-round pick in the First-Year Player Draft out of Arlington (Tx.) High School, is taking his physical at Camden Yards.

"Wide receiver for the football team. That's pretty exciting there. That's what they look like," Showalter said.

"Might play him tonight. Has he passed the physical yet?"

Showalter offered another opinion on the balloting for the All-Star Game. Eight Royals are counted among the current starters, with second baseman Omar Infante passing Houston's Jose Altuve. The Orioles have two players ranked fifth at their respective positions - center fielder Adam Jones and third baseman Manny Machado.

"What, do they have a virus in the computer or something?" Showalter asked. "It's got to be, right? There's got to be a virus in the computer. Really?"

Infante is batting .204 /.213/.283 in 53 games.

"Infante's the one who made the eighth?" Showalter said. "What's he hitting now, .204? He must be having a heck of a defensive year."
