O's game blog: Andrew Cashner faces Oakland at Oriole Park

After Tuesday's homestand-opening 3-2 loss to Oakland, the Orioles host the Athletics again tonight. It's Game 2 of a three-game series and nine-game homestand.

The Orioles (41-103) fell to 24-45 at home and saw a three-game home winning streak end. They are 0-4 against the Athletics for the year and 11-26 in one-run games. They recorded their 11th game with multiple stolen bases, their sixth since Aug. 20.

Orioles right fielder Adam Jones had singles in the second and fourth innings Tuesday. He produced his team-leading 40th multi-hit game and has five multi-hit games in his last eight games. Jones is batting .319 (45-for-141) in 37 games since the All-Star break. He is batting .462 (6-for-13) in three games against Oakland this season and is a career .294 (94-for-320) hitter against the A's.

Infielder Jonathan Villar drove in both Orioles runs with a solo homer and RBI single in four at-bats. Villar extended his hitting streak to a career-high-tying nine games, hitting .371 (13-for-35) in this stretch. He also had a nine-game hitting streak Sept. 6-15, 2013. Villar has four multi-hit games his last six games, going 10-for-22 (.455) in this span, and has five RBIs his past three games.

Cashner-White-Front-v-NYY-sidebar.jpgRight-hander Andrew Cashner (4-14, 4.89 ERA) has gone 0-4 his last four starts, posting a 5.87 ERA. In that stretch he has allowed 32 hits and seven homers, along with a .333 batting average against over 23 innings.

Cashner, who gave up three runs in 4 2/3 in his most recent start in Seattle, has 13 quality starts for the year. The Orioles are 8-19 in his 27 starts.

Oakland is starting an "opener" in right-hander Liam Hendriks (0-1, 6.32 ERA). Over his last three games, he has thrown three scoreless innings, and two of those were starts. Lefty batters are hitting .190 and right-handed hitters .357 off Hendriks.

On Tuesday night, the Orioles' Corban Joseph pinch-hit for brother Caleb Joseph in the bottom of the eighth inning. According to STATS, LLC., this marked the first time that a brother pinch-hit for his brother since Sept. 16, 2009, when Adrián Gonzalez pinch-hit for Edgar Gonzalez for the San Diego Padres against Arizona.

According to Baseball-Reference.com, Tuesday night's Joseph-for-Joseph swap marked the 72nd time in major league history that a brother pinch-hit for his brother. According to STATS, LLC., on June 19, Caleb and Corban became the first set of brothers as teammates since Melvin Upton Jr. and Justin Upton appeared on the roster together for the 2015 San Diego Padres. Cal Ripken Jr. and Billy Ripken are the only other set of brothers as teammates in Orioles history. Brothers Dick Brown and Larry Brown also played for the Orioles, but did not appear on the O's roster at the same time.
