O's game blog: Orioles look for 14th win this year against New York

The Orioles play the Yankees for the final time this season tonight and a victory would give the Orioles their second-most wins ever in the season series. The most victories for the Orioles in one season against New York was in 1966 at 15-3. They were 13-5 versus the Yankees in 1965, 1967, 1968 and 1976. Last night's win matched that as the 2014 Orioles. The Orioles have pitched as well against the Yankees this season as they have vs. other American League East teams: * Orioles against NYY - 13-5 with 2.78 ERA * Orioles against Boston - 11-8 with 2.91 ERA * Orioles against TB with 12-7 3.06 ERA * Orioles against Toronto with 10-6 3.60 ERA The Orioles have outscored New York 86-51 on the season. Derek Jeter, playing his last home game tonight, is batting .152 (10-for-66) against the Orioles with no homers and five RBIs. Kevin Gausman (7-7, 3.57 ERA) will pitch against Hiroki Kuroda (11-9, 3.77 ERA) tonight. Making his 25th career start, Gausman is 0-1 in four starts this month but his 2.73 September ERA is his second-best of the year behind his 2.63 ERA from June. In two starts this season against New York, Gausman is 1-0 with a 0.75 ERA, allowing one run over 12 innings. In seven career appearances, he is 3-1 with a 1.64 ERA. Gausman is tied for eighth among AL rookies in wins (seven) despite making fewer appearances than seven of the eight other AL rookies with seven or more victories. He also ranks 11th among AL rookies in innings pitched at 108 1/3. Among Orioles rookie pitchers since 1980, Gausman's 0.58 home runs per nine innings ranks fourth behind Arthur Rhodes 0.57 (1992), Nate Snell's 0.36 (1985), and Gregg Olson's club record for rookies of 0.11, set in 1989 (minimum of 75 innings pitched). The Orioles' current 3.45 team ERA currently ranks third in the American League (Seattle - 3.21 and Oakland - 3.25) and would be their lowest in a full season since 1979, when the AL champions posted a 3.26 mark. The lowest single-season team ERA in club history is 2.53, done in 1972.
