O's game blog: The series in the Bronx begins

Coming off their first walk-off win of the 2019 season, the Orioles begin a seven-game road trip today by playing a day-night doubleheader at New York.

They will play the Yankees at 1:05 and 7:05 p.m. It is the beginning of a three-day, four-game series in the Bronx, where the Orioles are 2-3 this year. They went 0-10 in Baltimore against the Yankees.

The Orioles were swept three straight by New York last Monday through Wednesday in Baltimore by scores of 9-6, 9-4 and 14-2. They gave up 16 homers in those games. They allowed 43 homers and 95 runs in the 10 games between the teams at Oriole Park.

The Orioles are 2-13 with 12 straight losses against New York. In the 15 games this year they have allowed 52 homers and 118 runs.

The Orioles (39-78) beat Houston 8-7 Sunday on the Rio Ruiz walk-off, two-run homer in the ninth. That completed a 3-7 homestand. The O's were the last team in the majors without a walk-off win this season. The Orioles are 8-10 over their past 18 games and 17-20 over the last 37.

New York (77-41) is leading the American League East by 8 1/2 games over the Tampa Bay Rays. The Yankees are 10-2 in the last 12 games. They are 36-14 since June 15 and 54-25 since May 12. The Yankees are 43-18 at home and 44-16 versus AL East opponents.

New York has scored in 200 consecutive games since June 30, 2018. The Yankees have hit 36 homers their last 15 games and 48 in the past 21. They have hit two or more homers in 19 of their last 27 games. When they hit more than one home run in 2019, they are 51-9.

Right-hander Gabriel Ynoa (1-6, 5.57 ERA) gets the start for the Orioles, his second straight against New York. Last Monday he allowed four runs (three earned) over 4 2/3 innings. Ynoa has made eight starts this year and is 0-5 with a 6.45 ERA and 1.434 WHIP and the Orioles are 1-7 in those games.

Lefty James Paxton (7-6, 4.40 ERA) will make his 21st start for New York and the team is 11-9 in those games. His last outing was a win over the Orioles last Wednesday in Baltimore when he gave up one run over 6 2/3 innings. For the year his WHIP is 1.427 and he allows 3.4 walks per nine innings with 11.4 strikeouts.

The Orioles' Jonathan Villar needs five home runs to mark the eighth time in club history that a player has totaled 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in a season. Villar has 15 homers and 26 steals. It would mark the first 20/20 season by an Oriole since Manny Machado (35 HRs/20 SBs) in 2015. Villar would become the sixth different Oriole with at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in a season - outfielder Brady Anderson did so three times (1992, 1996, 1999). Paul Blair did this in 1969, Don Baylor in 1975 and Reggie Jackson in 1976.
