The Orioles scored 27 runs in the first three games of their series in Anaheim. They scored eight in Tuesday's win at San Diego. They had scored 83 in the previous 13 games as the West Coast road trip came to an end.
But in two games to start this homestand against Toronto, the bats have been mostly quiet. A total of four runs on 15 hits.
After losing 11-2 last night they fall 5-2 tonight to the Blue Jays to drop to 36-73 and begin this series and 10-game homestand 0-2.
And they were shut down going into the seventh inning as Toronto went with a bullpen game. Right-hander Wilmer Font, acquired from the Mets on July 17, pitched the first two innings on 26 pitches. Righty Nick Kingham went the next three on two hits. Sam Gaviglio went 1 2/3, Tim Mayza got one out and right-hander Derek Law recorded the last six outs.
Right-hander Aaron Brooks made his fifth appearance for the Orioles and was quickly in a 2-0 hole. Toronto scored twice in the first on three hits. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. doubled with two outs and scored on Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s single to left. It was Guerrero's 10th RBI in three games, his 17th RBI over his last six games and 22nd in 13 games. Two batters later, Guerrero scored on a single by Freddy Galvis for the 2-0 lead.
From there, two homers helped Toronto expand that to 4-0. Galvis hit No. 17 in the fourth on a 2-1 fastball from Brooks. Brandon Drury hit No. 12 in the sixth on a 2-1 fastball from Gabriel Ynoa.
But the O's were not shutout tonight. Chris Davis hit No. 9 this year and No. 250 of his O's career. The two-run shot in the seventh scored Pedro Severino, who had singled. The O's pulled within two runs to make the score 4-2.
Davis became the fastest player in O's history to 250, doing so in his 1,110th game. Eddie Murray is next, doing so in 1,323 games. Over his past three games, Davis is 4-for-12 with two home runs.
The O's played tonight without Stevie Wilkerson, who fouled a pitch off his right knee last night. Hanser Alberto, who hit a foul ball off his left shin Thursday and didn't start, did pinch-hit in the ninth.
Toronto wrapped up the game's scoring against Paul Fry in the ninth. Galvis singled for his third hit, advanced to second on a grounder and scored on Derek Fisher's single for a 5-2 lead.
The Orioles host Game 3 of this series on Saturday night when right-hander Dylan Bundy (5-11, 5.24 ERA) faces left-hander Thomas Pannone (2-4, 6.16 ERA).
