O's right-hander Dylan Bundy on his 2018 and more at FanFest

Orioles right-hander Dylan Bundy did both some looking back and some looking forward when he was interviewed by reporters today at FanFest.

Bundy said he's talked a few times to new manager Brandon Hyde and new pitching coach Doug Brocail. He got to see both in person last night.

A reporter suggested that the starting rotation is a bit of mystery heading into training camp.

"Mysteries are exciting," said Bundy. "New staff and lot of new faces around. Definitely looking forward to it. I'm excited. We've got some young guys."

Bundy took time after last year to evaluate a 2018 season where he went 8-16 with an ERA of 5.45 in 31 starts. He set an Orioles record for homers allowed with 41, which was the most in the majors since Bronson Arroyo allowed 46 in 2011.

"Yeah, I left a whole lot of balls up in the zone and wasn't executing pitches, he said. "Especially when I was ahead in the count. Wasn't finishing guys the way I know how to. Mainly two-strikes pitches (that were not good enough) and even when you're behind in the count, you have to make better quality pitches to get back into the count."

Bundy suffered a left ankle injury in late June running in the bases in Atlanta. But he said late last year that was not a factor in his pitching then and he said the same today.

"Not at all. Ankle was totally fine. I was not doing well. Just wasn't able to get the ball where I needed to," he said.

Bundy said playing on a team that lost 115 games did wear on the players as the season went on. Did it hurt him on the stat sheet?

"I don't like to look at it that way, that it impacted my performance," he said. "Because I try to go out there and win as a team. But it was definitely hard and it took a toll on people, myself included. But that was in the past and now we are looking forward to spring training."
