Orioles acquire Yamaico Navarro, reach contract agreements with three

The Orioles have made a flurry of moves as the deadline approaches for offering contracts to their arbitration-eligible players, including a trade and three signings. Infielder Yamaico Navarro was acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates for minor league right-hander Jhondaniel Medina. Pitcher Stu Pomeranz was designated for assignment to make room for Navarro, 25, who batted .279/.366/.491 with nine home runs and 35 RBIs in 66 games with Triple-A Indianapolis and .160/.232/.220 with one home run and four RBIs in 29 games for the Pirates last season. Navarro has hit .191/.244/.250 in parts of three major league seasons with the Red Sox, Royals and Pirates. He's a career .279/.350/.437 hitter in 536 games over seven minor league seasons. Navarro has played 22 games at shortstop in the majors, 22 at third base, 11 in left field, four at second base and two in right field. He's also played first base and center field in the minors. Sounds like a utility candidate. Medina, 19, went a combined 1-3 with a 4.14 ERA in 10 games with the Gulf Coast Orioles and one game at Single-A Aberdeen. Pomeranz, 27, didn't allow a run in 10 minor league outings over 23 1/3 innings between Double-A Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk in 2012. He allowed two earned runs in six innings over three appearances with the Orioles before oblique and back injuries ended his season. The Orioles also agreed to terms on contracts for 2013 with infielder Alexi Casilla, outfielder Steve Pearce and catcher Taylor Teagarden, thus avoiding arbitration. Casilla made $1.38 million this season while batting .241/.282/.321 with 17 doubles, two triples, one homer, 30 RBIs and 21 steals in 22 attempts in 106 games with the Twins. He'll compete for the starting job at second base, and he can be used in a utility role if Brian Roberts is healthy for opening day. The signings of Teagarden and Pearce are unexpected. They were widely regarded as non-tender candidates. Teagarden batted .158/.226/.316 with three doubles, two homers and nine RBIs in 22 games. Pearce batted .254/.321/.437 with four doubles, three homers and 14 RBIs in 28 games with the Orioles. The 40-man roster remains full. Still no word on the other arbitration-eligible players, including first baseman Mark Reynolds. The deadline is 11:59 p.m.
