Orioles announce minor league coaching staffs and player development assignments for 2023

The Orioles today announced the club’s minor league coaching staffs and player development assignments for the 2023 season. The coaching staffs of Triple-A Norfolk, Double-A Bowie, High-A Aberdeen, and Low-A Delmarva are listed below, along with the Florida Complex League and Dominican Summer League Orioles.

The Orioles return the following managers to their same posts from the 2022 season: BUCK BRITTON (Norfolk), KYLE MOORE (Bowie), ROBERTO MERCADO (Aberdeen), FELIPE ROJAS ALOU, JR. (Delmarva), CHRISTIAN FRIAS (FCL Orioles), and ELBIS MOREL and CHRIS MADERA (DSL Orioles).

Britton returns for his second season as Manager of the Tides. In his Triple-A managerial debut season last year, two No. 1 overall prospects – ADLEY RUTSCHMAN and GUNNAR HENDERSON – were promoted from the Tides to the Orioles to make their Major League debuts. In total, 35 players appeared on both the Tides’ and Orioles’ active rosters during the 2022 season. Britton will be joined once again by Pitching Coach JUSTIN RAMSEY, who enters his fifth season in the organization and second with Norfolk. Ramsey will continue to serve as Upper-Level Pitching Coordinator in addition to his position with the Tides. BRINK AMBLER joins Norfolk as the Tides’ Hitting Coach after serving in the same role with the Shorebirds in 2022. Fundamentals Coach RAMÓN SAMBO and Development Coach JOSHUA RODRIGUES each return in their roles, with Sambo entering his fourth season in Norfolk and 17^th in the Orioles’ system, and Rodrigues entering his second season in the organization. Athletic Trainer ALAN RAIL, ATC and Strength and Conditioning Coach JON MEDICI also return to Norfolk. GRIFFIN PYOTT, ATC has been named Assistant Athletic Trainer after serving in the same role with Delmarva in 2022, his first season in the organization. ADAM SEHLMEYER returns as Norfolk’s Clubhouse Manager.

Moore returns to Bowie for the second season and his sixth as a manager in Baltimore’s farm system. In Moore’s first season skippering the Baysox, Bowie went 68-70, including posting a 41-28 record in the second half. Pitching Coach FORREST HERRMANN makes the jump to Double-A for his second season in the organization, having most recently served in the same role with Aberdeen in 2022. SHERMAN JOHNSON makes his coaching debut as Bowie’s Hitting Coach. A former infielder, Johnson appeared in 10 games for the Los Angeles Angels in 2018 and played in parts of nine minor league seasons in the Angels, Cincinnati Reds, and Minnesota Twins organizations, as well as a stint with the independent league Kane County Cougars in 2022. He played two seasons at Florida State University. TIM DeJOHN returns for his second season as Fundamentals Coach with the Baysox. In addition to his role with Bowie, DeJohn has also been promoted to Minor League Infield Coordinator for all affiliate levels. Development Coach RYAN GOLL and Athletic Trainer ALLYSE KRAMER, ATC have been promoted from Aberdeen. Goll has also been promoted to Offseason Camp Coordinator. JON WEINBERG returns as Bowie’s Clubhouse Manager.

After making his professional coaching debut last year, Mercado returns as the Manager of the IronBirds. He led Aberdeen to a 78-54 record and a South Atlantic League championship appearance in his first season. Pitching Coach AUSTIN MEINE joins the Orioles from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he had served as Pitching Coordinator since 2021. Hitting Coach ZACH COLE enters his second season with the IronBirds and third in the organization. CHASE SEBBY, a former all-conference catcher at Ball State (IN), has been promoted to serve as Aberdeen’s Fundamentals Coach after joining the Orioles in 2022 as FCL Development Coach. BILLY FACTEAU will serve as Aberdeen’s Development Coach, a role he held with the Baysox last season. Athletic Trainer TORI ATENCIO, ATC joins the organization after serving as Athletic Trainer for the Pioneer League Billings Mustangs and as an Assistant Athletic Trainer at Montana State University Billings. SAM SAUER will serve as the Strength and Conditioning Coach for the IronBirds, moving up from the FCL. ROSS STOVALL returns as Aberdeen’s Clubhouse Manager.

Alou returns to manage the Shorebirds, his second managerial season and 16^th year in the organization. Pitching Coach ADAM BLEDAY and Hitting Coach JOSH BUNSELMEYER join Delmarva’s staff after holding the same roles in the FCL in 2022. DANIEL FAJARDO, who spent eight years as a player in Baltimore’s farm system, returns as Delmarva’s Fundamentals Coach, while COLLIN MURRAY reprises his role as Development Coach. JULIO IBARRA, ATC continues as Athletic Trainer, while CHRIS FROSCH will serve as Delmarva’s Strength and Conditioning Coach after serving as a Seasonal Strength and Conditioning coach in Sarasota during the 2022 season. TIM CAHILELLIS returns as Delmarva’s Clubhouse Manager.

Frias returns to manage the FCL Orioles. JORDIE HENRY and ANDY SADOSKI will serve as Pitching Coaches. Henry joins the organization from Prime Sports Performance in Baltimore, where he most recently served as Director of Pitching. He played four seasons at  Wayland Baptist University (TX). Former Orioles minor leaguer JAYLEN FERGUSON returns as Hitting Coach, joined by CHRISTIAN POULSEN, who served as one of the DSL Orioles Hitting Coaches in 2022. TROY MARROW and COLLIN WOODY each return as Fundamentals Coaches. ISAIAH PAIGE will serve as Pitching Development Coach after spending the 2022 season as a Fundamentals Coach with Aberdeen. TEEGAN LEADER will serve as Development Coach, his fourth season in the organization. SARA PADILLA, ATC will serve as Athletic Trainer. JULIO DIAZ will serve as Strength and Conditioning Coach/Complex Strength and Conditioning Coordinator, overseeing both Sarasota and the Dominican Republic Academy, while GABE SANCHEZ will serve as the other FCL Strength and Conditioning Coach. MASON GOMEZ and NATE SNYDER return as FSL Clubhouse Managers.

Madera and Morel return to manage the two DSL Orioles teams. DIONI PASCUAL returns as Pitching Coach. JULIAN GONZÁLEZ and JAKE RATZ will serve as Hitting Coaches. MIGUEL JABALERA and RAMÓN LUBO return as Fundamentals Coaches. MAEGAN MANROW, ATC and SANDRA HERNANDEZ, ATC will serve as Athletic Trainers, while WILL REICHEL and DANIEL VARGAS will be the Strength & Conditioning Coaches. JOSE FRIASreturns as DSL Equipment Manager.

Overseeing one of the top farm systems in all of baseball are MATT BLOOD, who enters his fourth season with the Orioles as Director of Player Development, and KENT QUALLS, returning for his 11^th season as Director of Minor League Operations. Coordinator of Minor League Operations RAMÓN ALARCÓN, Coordinator of Minor League Technology JOE BOTELHO, Education Coordinator ANAÍMA GARCÍA, Coordinator of Instruction JEFF KUNKEL, Minor League Pitching Coordinator MITCH PLASSMEYER, Complex Pitching and Rehab Coordinator DAVE SCHMIDT, and Latin American Pitching Supervisor ANDERSON TAVÁREZ return in their roles, along with Norfolk’s Pitching Coach JUSTIN RAMSEY returning as Upper-Level Pitching Coordinator. MATT PACKER shifts to Complex Coordinator of Instruction after making his managerial debut with the FCL Orioles in 2022. After most recently serving as Lower-Level Hitting Coordinator, ANTHONY VILLA has been promoted to Hitting Coordinator, covering all affiliate levels. The Orioles return DAVID BARRY and ADAM SCHUCK as Player Development Analysts for hitting and pitching, respectively, and JACKSON McDONNELL as Player Development Assistant, Complexes. RANCEL ROSADO will continue to serve as the Orioles’ Dominican Academy Administrator, with SAMUEL VEGAcontinuing as Latin American Field Coordinator. ELENA PEREZ and VICTORIA PEREZ will serve as DSL Teachers. SCOTT STANSBURY, ATC continues as Minor League Medical Coordinator, with AJ CANO, ATC returning as International Medical Coordinator and BYRON CAMPBELL as Minor League Physical Therapist. MATT HUNTER, ATC joins the organization as Assistant Minor League Medical Coordinator, having most recently served as Minor League Medical Coordinator with the New York Mets. NICK WHITE returns as Head of Strength and Performance, leading a team of Minor League Strength and Conditioning Coordinator WILL ALLI, Rehab Strength Coach BRANDON FARISH, Biomechanist JOEY MYLOTT, and Mental Skills Coach KATHRYN ROWE. JAKE PARKER returns as Minor League Equipment Manager for the 14^th season.
