The roster moves keep coming for the Orioles. They've barely taken a breath today.
Pitcher Shaun Anderson was claimed off waivers from the Rangers and optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. Pitcher Konner Wade was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.
Also, Stevie Wilkerson cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Norfolk.
Anderson, 26, was a third-round draft pick of the Red Sox in 2016 out of the University of Florida. He pitched for the Giants in 2019-20 and the Twins this summer.
The Rangers selected him off waivers June 18, but he didn't appear in a game.
Anderson allowed nine earned runs and 12 total with the Twins in four relief appearances over 8 2/3 innings. He has a 5.48 ERA and 1.575 WHIP in 50 career games, including 16 starts in 2019.
John Means will throw two or three innings Sunday at Single-A Aberdeen. Reliever César Valdez could be activated Sunday from the injured list. Left-hander Bruce Zimmermann could be pushed back another week or two in his recovery from biceps tendinitis.
Domingo Leyba is the third baseman again tonight with Maikel Franco nursing a sprained ankle. Ramón Urias stays at shortstop and Pat Valaika at second base.
Ryan Mountcastle is the first baseman and Trey Mancini is the designated hitter.
Austin Hays is starting in left field. Hays extended his hitting streak to nine games, a career high, and is batting .412 (14-for-34) with two doubles, two homers and nine RBIs during that stretch..
Jorge López is 2-10 with a 5.92 ERA and 1.553 WHIP in 16 starts. He leads the American League in losses and is tied with the Reds' Luis Castillo for most in the majors.
Matt Harvey is tied for second with nine.
López has made one career start against the Angels. He allowed four runs and six hits and walked three batters in 3 2/3 innings.
The Orioles received another short start last night with left-hander Keegan Akin going three innings in an 8-7 loss. He was pulled after 64 pitches.
Former Oriole Alex Cobb is 5-3 with a 5.09 ERA and 1.302 WHIP in 11 starts. He's surrendered only three home runs in 53 innings and is averaging a career-high 10.7 strikeouts per nine innings.
Cobb is 6-2 with a 2.70 ERA and 1.200 WHIP in 12 career starts against the Orioles.
Shohei Ohtani homered twice last night and scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. His 30 homers are the most before the break in Angels history.
His 30th home run passed Babe Ruth (29 in 1919) for the most by a player who made at least 10 appearances as a pitcher in a single season.
Ohtani is on pace to hit 60 home runs, drive in 132 runs and strike out 166 batters.
The Angels have won 12 or their last 17 home games and seven of 10.
