Orioles DFA Eveland, claim Z. Wheeler from Brewers (NY lineup)

SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles have designated left-hander Dana Eveland for assignment to make room for infielder Zelous Wheeler, who was claimed off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers. Eveland allowed three runs and six hits in four innings during yesterday's start against the Blue Jays. He was 1-2 with a 3.46 ERA and 17 hits allowed in 13 spring innings. The Orioles acquired Eveland from the Dodgers at the winter meetings for minor league left-hander Jarret Martin and outfielder Tyler Henson. Eveland, who settled for $750,000 before going to arbitration, said he'll accept an outright assignment to Triple-A Norfolk if he clears waivers and the Orioles want to keep him in the organization. "I know my life's in limbo for a few days," Eveland said. "I don't know what's going to happen now. I don't really know what to think of it right now. It kind of sucks, obviously. I really wanted to make this team, but things don't always go your way and you move on from here. "I'm not going to walk away from my contract here if they're going to pay me. We'll see." The Orioles are willing to lose Eveland off waivers despite trading two minor leaguers for him. "They got me and then they went and signed more guys after me, which kind of lowered me on the totem pole," he said. "I think when they first signed me, they saw me in a little bit different role, but then they got (Tsuyoshi) Wada and (Wei-Yin) Chen after me, so that kind of changed things a little bit. "I don't know how Dan (Duquette) really feels about me. Hopefully, he likes me. I know he's got to make some tough decisions, and unfortunately I was on the wrong end of one. It sucks for me but good for the team, good problem to have with this many good arms. Hopefully, if I do go to Triple-A, eventually you're going to need extra arms. If I keep throwing well, hopefully I'll be back. "I feel like I'm a big leaguer. I feel like I've got big league stuff, and I feel like I've proved that over my career. I've had some goods and some bads, but last year I threw the ball really well all year. I know I'm a big league pitcher and I might have to go to Triple-A to prove it again, but oh well." Wheeler, 25, is mostly a third baseman but has also played shortstop, second base and left field. He's got a career .371 on-base percentage in five minor league seasons, which obviously appeals to Duquette. Wheeler, a 19th-round pick by the Brewers in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, is a career .271 hitter in the minors.
