The Orioles today announced that they have named Dom Chiti as their new bullpen coach. Chiti, 54, has worked in front offices, or on major or minor league staffs, since 1982. He joins the Orioles from Atlanta, where he had served as Special Assistant to the General Manager since 2008, additionally serving as Pitching Development and Special Assignment in 2013.
Prior to working Atlanta, Chiti was part of the Texas organization, where he served in multiple roles from 2002 through 2008. Chiti was the bullpen coach for the Rangers for three seasons (2006-08), a role he took over after serving as Director of Player Personnel from July 2004 through the 2005 season. Chiti joined the Rangers in 2002 as a Special Assistant to the General Manager (2002-03), and also served as the club's advance scout in the first half of the 2004 season.
Chiti also spent 12 years (1989-2001) in the Cleveland Indians organization. He served as the club's American League advance scout from 1996-2001 after joining the team in 1989 as a roving minor league instructor. He was promoted to the Major League club's bullpen coach in 1992 and served as an advance scout in 1994. In 1995, he was the pitching coach for Triple-A Buffalo, a club that made the International League playoffs.
In 1982, Chiti's coaching career began in the Orioles organization, where he spent nine seasons, serving as a minor league pitching coach and a roving pitching instructor.
Originally selected out of Raleigh-Egypt (TN) High School by the Braves in the second round of the 1976 draft, the left-hander pitched in the Braves system (1976-80) before ending his career with Baltimore affiliate Hagerstown in 1981. Chiti attended New River Community College in Dublin, VA, and majored in accounting.
Chiti's father, Harry, was a major leaguer who spent more than eight seasons with the Chicago Cubs, Kansas City Royals, Detroit Tigers and the New York Mets.
Bill Castro and Scott McGregor, who served as bullpen coaches in 2013, have been offered positions within the organization.
