Orioles notes before today's series opener (updated)

The Orioles are recalling rookie left-hander Zac Lowther from Triple-A Norfolk today but haven't announced the move or who's leaving the active roster for the series opener against the Royals at Camden Yards.

This is Lowther's second major league start and sixth appearance. He's allowed 10 runs and 13 hits in 8 1/3 innings. His lone start was May 8 against the Red Sox, when he surrendered seven runs and seven hits in 2 1 /3 innings.

Lowther has never faced the Royals, who are 61-75 overall and 27-40 on the road.

"It's September, we're going to evaluate our young pitchers," said manager Brandon Hyde. "Zac's coming off a pretty good outing in Norfolk. Wanted to give him an opportunity here, make some starts, see what we have going forward. This is a great opportunity for him to get a couple starts in the big leagues at the end of the year to open some eyes in the front office, and hopefully he pitches well."

Ramón Urías is out of the lineup with soreness in his right upper leg, but the Orioles aren't summoning an extra infielder.

They still haven't posted the lineup with first pitch about 35 minutes away.

The Orioles won two of three games in Kansas City. Their last three-game sweep of the Royals at Camden Yards came in 2017. The Royals' last three-game sweep in Baltimore was in 1998.

The Orioles faced three left-handed starters in Toronto and two in New York. Now they get Kris Bubic, the Royals' first-round pick in 2018 out of Stanford University.

Bubic has made 24 appearances, including 15 starts, and gone 4-6 with a 5.16 ERA and 1.530 WHIP in 99 1/3 innings. He's averaging 4.7 walks per nine innings.

The Orioles faced Bubic on July 17 in Kansas City and were held to one run and two hits in six innings in an 8-4 win.

Kris Bubic LHP

Yesterday marked the second time this season that Orioles pitchers recorded their first major league win and save in the same game. Marcos Diplán and Tyler Wells did it yesterday at Yankee Stadium and Alexander Wells and Dillon Tate did it June 29 against the Astros.

It's happened 11 times in club history since 1969, according to STATS.

Hall of Famer Eddie Murray is throwing out the ceremonial first pitch on the anniversary of his 500th home run, and for today's T-shirt giveaway.

The rest of the Royals' starters for the series are listed as Jackson Kowar, Mike Minor and Carlos Hernández. Hyde said he doesn't know who's starting for the Orioles on Tuesday.

"Honestly, our pitching right now is a day-to-day, series-to-series thing," he said. "We have some options, but nothing's set in stone. We're really short in the bullpen. Guys that have a chance to start tomorrow are going to be in our bullpen today just in case. So right now looking forward, it's hard to map out what the rotation is.

"(Matt) Harvey's thrown a ton of innings this year. I'm trying to push him back as much as I possibly can. It's difficult right now."

Update: Reliever Dusten Knight was optioned to Norfolk as the corresponding move. He didn't appear in a game after joining the expanded roster on Wednesday
