Orioles notes on infield coordinator and Mark Hendrickson

The Orioles are preparing to hire Matt Martin as their new minor league infield coordinator, a position that became vacant with Bobby Dickerson's promotion to third base coach. Martin, 43, served in the same role with the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2007-2011. Last year, he was named manager of the AZL Dodgers and coordinator of Arizona instruction. Previously, Martin managed the Pioneer League's Billings Mustangs (1996), the New York-Penn League's Jamestown Jammers (1997) and the Gulf Coast League Yankees (2006). Martin was an infielder in the Cincinnati Reds system from 1991-1994. The Orioles considered giving the job to Denny Hocking, but he left the organization to manage the Los Angeles Angels' rookie-league team in Arizona. In other news, former Orioles left-hander Mark Hendrickson will throw at next week's mini-camp at Camden Yards leading up to FanFest. The camp runs from Wednesday through Friday and mostly includes pitchers on the 40-man roster, though Kevin Gausman and Mike Wright also are expected to attend. Hendrickson, 38, hasn't pitched in the majors since appearing in eight games with the Orioles in 2011, allowing seven runs and 15 hits in 11 innings. He also made 24 appearances at Triple-A Norfolk Hendrickson, who still lives in York, Pa., took the advice of Orioles manager Buck Showalter and lowered his arm slot. He's now using a sidearm delivery, which is intriguing for a 6-foot-9 pitcher. You don't see many guys that size, especially a left-hander, throwing at that angle. His appearance at the mini-camp is a tryout of sorts, with no promises that the Orioles are going to offer him a contract, but they're interested enough to take a look and determine whether he could be effective coming out of the bullpen. Hendrickson was 8-11 with a 4.80 ERA in 113 games with the Orioles, including 12 starts, over parts of three seasons.
