The Orioles just announced their anticipated roster move. They optioned reliever Preston Guilmet to Triple-A Norfolk to create room for Miguel Gonzalez, who has been recalled and is starting tonight against the Angels in Anaheim.
Guilmet, 26, has posted a 5.23 ERA in 10 1/3 innings with the Orioles, striking out 12 over his 10 appearances. He tossed a scoreless inning Sunday in Oakland.
Guilmet has been optioned five times this season. He knows the drill.
Manager Buck Showalter hinted before the break that Guilmet and catcher Steve Clevenger could be sent back down when Gonzalez and pitcher Bud Norris were recalled. Norris returned from Double-A Bowie and started last night, with Clevenger being optioned to Norfolk.
Clevenger is expected to return to the Tides on Thursday. Outfielder Henry Urrutia, who had an RBI single today with the Gulf Coast League team, is likely to join him this weekend.
Gonzalez, 30, is 4-5 with a 4.04 ERA in 16 games (15 starts) for the Orioles. He's gone eight innings in consecutive starts for the first time in his career.
Gonzalez is the second Orioles pitcher this season to make back-to-back starts of eight innings or more, joining Chris Tillman (April 6-11).
