Orioles reach agreement with Webb on two-year deal (Feldman note)

The Orioles made another move to bolster their bullpen, agreeing to terms with former Marlins right-hander Ryan Webb on a two-year, $4.5 million deal, according to an industry source. He will take his physical next week in Baltimore. Webb, who turns 28 in February, was non-tendered by the Marlins after going 2-6 with a 2.91 ERA in 66 games. He allowed 70 hits, walked 27 and struck out 54 in 80 1/3 innings. Webb, a fourth-round pick of the Athletics in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft, made $975,000 this season. The Orioles traded closer Jim Johnson to the Athletics on Monday and Webb could compete for the vacant job, though he hasn't posted a save in 266 major league games over five seasons and is more likely viewed as a set-up man. He's 13-15 with a 3.29 ERA in 276 innings. The Orioles will determine his role later, but he's a groundball pitcher who doesn't give up many home runs. He's got a heavy sinker and a good curveball, and he routinely keeps the ball down in the strike zone. Right-handers and left-handers both hit .244 against Webb this year. On Nov. 13, 2010, the Padres traded Webb and reliever Edward Mujica to the Marlins for Cameron Maybin. The Orioles were interested in Mujia as a potential closer before he agreed to terms yesterday with the Red Sox on a two-year, $9.5 million deal. Also, the Orioles officially have reached agreement with former Giants outfielder Francisco Peguero, 25, on a one-year contract. He will take his physical later today before signing. Peguero went 6-for-29 with the Giants this year, posting a .207/.233/.345 line with a double, home run, four runs scored and two stolen bases in 18 games. He was 3-for-16 with seven strikeouts, six runs scored and three stolen bases in 2012. Peguero is a career .306/.337/.427 hitter in eight minor league seasons, with 36 homers, 350 RBIs and 131 stolen bases. He batted .316/.354/.408 with three homers and 30 RBIs in 288 plate appearances with Triple-A Fresno this year. The Orioles will have 39 players on their 40-man roster with the additions of Webb and Peguero. Note: FOX Sports is reporting that pitcher Scott Feldman has agreed to terms with the Astros on a three-year, $30 million contract. The Orioles wanted to re-sign Feldman, but were reluctant to offer a third guaranteed year. Feldman went 5-6 with a 4.27 ERA in 15 starts with the Orioles after being acquired from the Cubs along with catcher Steve Clevenger on July 2 for pitchers Jake Arrieta and Pedro Strop.
