Orioles recall Mattson and DFA Greene

The bullpen is changing again for the Orioles, who announced this afternoon that they recalled Isaac Mattson from Triple-A Norfolk and that Conner Greene would be designated for assignment.

They also reinstated left-hander Ryan Hartman from the injured list at Triple-A Norfolk after he completed the intake process. Hartman goes on the 40-man roster, with Greene's removal opening a spot.

He has a 9.53 ERA and 2.471 WHIP in 14 appearances with Norfolk, with 12 earned runs (13 total), 22 hits, six walks and 14 strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings.

Mattson provides a fresh arm. He hasn't pitched since Aug. 3 after returning to the Tides following an absence of about three weeks to attend to a personal matter.

Greene surrendered Nelson Cruz's three-run homer last night. He allowed six runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings in his three appearances, striking out five batters.

The Orioles will wait to find out whether a team claims Greene and infielders Domingo Leyba and Pat Valaika.

The Padres claimed right-hander Shaun Anderson off waivers earlier today and optioned him to Triple-A El Paso.

The Orioles and Rays are waiting to post their lineups for tonight's game.

Cedric Mullins has a 14-game hitting streak. He's scored a run in five consecutive games, tied for the longest streak of his career.

Catcher Pedro Severino has four home runs in his last seven games.

Seven of Austin Hays' last nine hits have been for extra bases. He's batting .311 (33-for-106) off left-handers and .193 (35-for-181) versus right-handers.

Rookie Spenser Watkins has a 3.81 ERA and 1.308 WHIP in six games (five starts). He's allowed eight runs and 12 hits in his last two starts over 9 2/3 innings.

Watkins' third major league start came against the Rays and he held them to only one run with seven strikeouts in six innings.

The Orioles have lost three in a row and are 38-70. They're 1-9 against the Rays and must win each of their next nine games to avoid losing the season series for the fifth consecutive year.

Tampa Bay rookie left-hander Shane McClanahan, who was born in Baltimore and grew up idolizing Cal Ripken Jr., is 5-4 with a 3.74 ERA and 1.286 WHIP in 16 starts and averaging 10.6 strikeouts per nine innings. He faced the Orioles on July 20 in St. Petersburg, Fla. and allowed one run with seven strikeouts in five innings.

The Rays reinstated pitcher Collin McHugh from the injured list.
