Orioles recall Nevin and option Waddell (updated)

The Orioles have brought Triple-A Norfolk corner infielder Tyler Nevin to Chicago for tonight's game against the White Sox and he's expected to be placed on the active roster.

The club is short on healthy first basemen with Ryan Mountcastle taking a 93 mph fastball off his left hand Tuesday and Trey Mancini being struck in the right elbow last night by a 95 mph fastball.

Mountcastle has been day-to-day, deemed unavailable again last night after taking some swings in the cage. Pat Valaika replaced Mancini, who exited last night before the bottom of the first inning.

Mancini made a few throws across the infield and headed for the clubhouse, leaving the Orioles with catcher Pedro Severino as their only healthy reserve.

The Orioles are optioning left-hander Brandon Waddell, per a source, which could be the corresponding move for Nevin. Otherwise, someone is headed to the injured list, where outfielder Austin Hays already resides with a strained left hamstring.

Nevin-Swings-Whit-ST-Sidebar.jpgNevin was batting .212/.260/.470 with two doubles, five home runs, 11 RBIs and 20 strikeouts in 73 plate appearances. The Orioles acquired him from the Rockies last summer in the Mychal Givens trade and he's waiting to make his major league debut.

The Rockies made Nevin, 23, the 38th overall pick in the 2015 draft. He's on the 40-man roster, so no corresponding move would be necessary to fit him onto it.

Nevin is the son of Yankees third base coach Phil Nevin.

Matt Harvey is making his 11th start tonight. He's allowed 18 earned runs (19 total) and 24 hits in the last three, covering 10 2/3 innings.

Harvey has made four career appearances against the White Sox and allowed only one run and nine hits with one walk and 20 strikeouts in 19 innings. He's never pitched at Guaranteed Rate Field.

The Orioles have lost 10 games in a row and 17 of 19.

Left-hander Dallas Keuchel posted a 1.99 ERA and 1.089 WHIP last summer in 11 starts with the White Sox and placed fifth in American League Cy Young Award voting. He's made 10 starts this season and registered a 4.28 ERA and 1.280 WHIP.

Keuchel has a career 2.81 ERA and 1.188 WHIP in eight starts against the Orioles.
