Orioles recalling Cobb for Saturday start (and other notes)

Alex Cobb will make his Orioles debut on Saturday against the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Cobb is flying out of Florida later today and will have a work day at Double-A Bowie. He went six innings today in an extended spring training game against the Twins.

mark-trumbo-white-bat.pngMark Trumbo also is leaving Florida and will play in Bowie the next two nights. The Orioles will decide whether he remains on his injury rehab assignment through the weekend.

Trumbo played first base today in Sarasota, going 2-for-3 with a home run and a walk, and manager Buck Showalter said the veteran is tied for the home run lead in extended spring training.

Showalter said the club wanted a right-handed long reliever and Hunter Harvey made sense to them. He has options and the move could be temporary, but Showalter also pointed out that the former first-round pick is "good" and deserving of the promotion.

Left-hander Tanner Scott wouldn't have been available for at least two days and he's never pitched on back-to-back days. The Blue Jays roster is heavy with right-handed hitters, a prime reason why Showalter wanted a right-handed reliever.

Scott split a finger nail while warming up yesterday and his finger was bleeding, but he still managed to pitch.

The Orioles considered the possibility of bringing up two relievers for tonight's game.

Mike Wright Jr., who retired only two batters yesterday at Yankee Stadium, will be available out of the bullpen on Tuesday and he was headed to the field this afternoon to see whether he might be able to pitch tonight if needed.

Showalter said he expects the Orioles to face four left-handed starters in the Red Sox series that begins on Friday.

Asked about left-hander Richard Bleier saying he'd pitch every day as long as he's in the majors, Showalter smiled and replied, "He does, but he won't."
