It would be one thing for the Orioles to win a big game in Yankee Stadium with the middle of their order doing most of the damage and/or Dylan Bundy or Zach Britton on the mound, but it was quite another on Sunday in the Bronx.
The Orioles pulled out the 12-inning, 8-7 win with two Rule picks 5 contributing big in outfielder Anthony Santander and pitcher Pedro Araujo. Backup outfielder Craig Gentry made a game-saving catch in the 10th and later produced the winning single. And there were so many others. Richard Bleier's big outing and catcher Caleb Joseph helping to turn the first 1-2-5 double play in Orioles history.
Joseph today discussed how the Orioles for years have won games using their entire roster and sometimes - in fact, many times - getting contributions from unexpected sources.
"We depend on all cylinders and all cylinders have to be firing," Joseph said. "We love to lean on C.D. (Chris Davis), Manny (Machado), Schoopy (Jonathan Schoop) and Jonesy (Adam Jones), but when we get contributions from the other guys, it really shows the well-roundedness of this team. It's been kind of a theme since I've been here at least. We pick up kind of what seems to be everybody else's castoffs, you know - what they deem castoffs - and they come to us and help us win games.
"They come here with fire and determination. They've got a lot of TWTW - the will to win. And you can't measure that. You can't. It's one thing to be settled into a contract and know you're secure. It's another thing to be fighting tooth and nail every day to keep your spot. When you have that, you have hungry players. When you get hungry players, you get great performances. I'll go to battle with all these guys every day. These are my guys, blue-collar guys. Love being in this clubhouse and going to war with these guys."
Yeah, that was pretty well said. And taking three of four in New York produced one more win for the Orioles at Yankee Stadium than they had in 10 games there last year.
"Great series for us," Joseph said. "Showed a lot of grit and determination. Lot of guys really pitched really well out of the bullpen. Tough conditions and we played a tough team. But getting three out of four after losing three in Houston was big for us."
Could it prove to be a difference-making series, one that might have long-term ramifications?
"You never know which game is going to cost you in the end," he said. "It seems like, toward the end of the season, there are always four or five teams within two or three games and it's easy to look back and say that game Sept. 5 was big for us. But so was that game on April 5. It was a big win for us. It was a team-uniting win and we had two of those in one series. You can feel the cohesiveness of this club really pulling together."
