Orioles reinstate Stewart and option Shepherd

BOSTON - The Orioles have increased the number of reserves on their bench today to four by reinstating outfielder DJ Stewart from the seven-day concussion injured list and optioning reliever Chandler Shepherd to Triple-A Norfolk.

Chandler made his major league debut Tuesday night in New York and held the Yankees to one run over four innings.

Stewart-Sprawling-White-sidebar.jpgStewart attempted to make a sliding catch in left field in an Aug. 6 game against the Yankees and the ball struck him on the left temple. He played two games with Norfolk on a rehab assignment and the Orioles returned him to the active roster.

The Orioles will try to keep him healthy.

Stewart also was sidelined this year with a sprained left ankle.

Jimmy Yacabonis cleared waivers and was outrighted to Norfolk.

The Orioles designated Yacabonis for assignment Wednesday to make room for pitcher Ryan Eades on the 40-man roster. Eades was optioned to Norfolk.

Yacabonis, a 13th round pick in 2013 out of St. Joseph's University, had a 6.80 ERA and 1.829 WHIP this season in 29 games (four starts). He's 3-4 with a 5.75 ERA and 1.623 WHIP in 55 major league games.

Aaron Brooks is making his seventh start with the Orioles and trying to lower a 9.41 ERA and 1.773 WHIP. In his last four appearances he's allowed 22 earned runs (23 total) and 30 hits in 16 2/3 innings.

Brooks surrendered four home runs in his last start and allowed nine runs and nine hits over three innings in a 23-2 loss to the Astros.

His first start of the season while pitching for the Athletics consisted of six scoreless innings against the Red Sox on April 1. He allowed only two hits. He saw them again in Boston on April 30 and allowed four earned runs (five total) with six hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Xander Bogaerts is 3-for-6 with three doubles against him.

Rick Porcello is 10-9 with a 5.67 ERA and 1.425 WHIP in 24 starts. His 84 earned runs allowed led the American League yesterday.

Porcello has made two starts against the Orioles this season and allowed nine runs and 17 hits with six walks in nine innings.

Trey Mancini is 6-for-12 with four doubles against Porcello. Anthony Santander is 3-for-3 with a triple and a home run.

Chris Davis, out of the lineup the past two games, is 13-for-55 (.236) with a double, four home runs and 16 strikeouts.

The Orioles and Red Sox continue to list their Sunday starters at TBD. Asher Wojciechowski opposes left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez on Saturday.

Dean Kremer has been promoted from Double-A Bowie to Norfolk and is starting tonight for the Tides. Kremer was 9-4 with a 2.98 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in 15 starts with the Baysox.

Kremer allowed 12 earned runs in his last 10 starts over 55 1/3 innings.

Six Aberdeen IronBirds were chosen to the short-season Single-A New York-Penn League All-Star team: Pitchers Ryan Conroy and Leonardo Rodriguez, infielders Toby Welk and Andrew Fregia and outfielders Kyle Stowers and Dalton Hoiles.

Stowers was the 71st overall pick in the 2019 First-Year Player Draft.
