Orioles pound out 17 hits in 11-7 win

SAN DIEGO - Six victories in a row and eight in the last 10 games. Sixteen games above .500.

The Orioles are beating up on struggling teams, just as they're supposed to do while leading the American League East. The Padres, the Rays, the Padres again. It's not for the squeamish or the faint of heart.

Three more home runs were only part of the story tonight in an 11-7 win over the Padres at Petco Park. A significant part, given how Adam Jones, Hyun Soo Kim and Chris Davis increased the June total to 54 and left the Orioles one behind the 1996 Athletics for the all-time record.

Jonathan Schoop collected three more hits, making more fans wonder why he isn't in the top five among American League second basemen in All-Star voting. Davis finished with a home run, double and single. Manny Machado had three singles as part of the Orioles' 17-hit attack.

Kim had a two-run homer, an RBI double and two walks, because he's an on-base machine.

Every starter collected at least one hit except for pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez. J.J. Hardy singled twice and was robbed of a two-run homer on a spectacular leaping catch by center fielder Melvin Upton, Jr.

The Orioles sent 12 batters to the plate in the sixth inning while scoring seven runs. They've reached double digits in back-to-back games and in three of the last nine. They've scored 70 runs in their last nine games, an average of 7.8 per game.

Is that good?

Jimenez allowed only one run and three hits in five innings to record wins in back-to-back starts for the first time since Sept 4 and 9, 2015 in Toronto and New York. He walked four batters, struck out five and gave up a home run.

Jimenez threw 87 pitches, 49 for strikes, before manager Buck Showalter decided to pinch-hit for him and bring in Oliver Drake.

Jones and Upton homered to lead off the top and bottom of the first, respectively. According to STATS, it's the first time that the Orioles were involved in a game with both leadoff hitters homering since Brian Roberts and the Yankees' Johnny Damon on Aug. 17, 2006.

The last time it happened in the majors was May 30 with the Reds' Zack Cozart and the Rockies' Charlie Blackmon.

Wil Myers hit a three-run homer off Drake in the seventh after the Orioles built an 11-1 lead, giving him 11 this month to break Greg Vaughn's club record of 10 set in June 1998. His 20 extra-base hits also are a record for June.

Left-hander T.J. McFarland gave up three runs with two outs in the ninth.

The Orioles maintain a 4 ½-game lead over the Red Sox in the AL East.
