Post-game notes: O's take series opener vs. Nats

Here are some post-game notes from Friday's 5-3 Orioles win over Washington. The win featured an Adam Jones two-run homer and Craig Tatum two-run single and David Hernandez gaining his first victory of the 2010 season. Win and losses: The Orioles are now 1-2 on this road trip, 6-17 on the road this year and only 7-26 in their last 33 road games. They are 23-14 in interleague play since 2008 and 102-128 all-time in interleague games. They are 13-12 vs. the Nats since they moved to Washington in 2006. The Orioles are 5-5 over the last ten games and 12-13 over the last 25 games. They are 12-5 when scoring four or more runs, 11-12 when they score first and 11-15 in games when they hit at least one homer. They pitched better: One night after O's pitching allowed a season-high 13 runs and 20 hits, they gave up just three runs on five hits. The O's scored 12 runs over their last two games after scoring a total of 13 over the previous five games. In their 14 wins, the O's are batting .353 with runners in scoring positon after going 2 for 7 on Friday. Finally, a four-bagger: Adam Jones snapped a 23-game homerless streak with a two-run shot in the second. It was his 4th homer of the year and first since April 24. Jones is 10 for 30 (.333) during an eight-game batting streak and now has three extra-base hits over a 19-game stretch. Catcher Craig Tatum went 2 for 3 with a two-run single. He is 5 for 7 over his last three games after a 1 for 17 start to the season. Nick Markakis went 1 for 5 and is 7 for 20 (.350) during a five-game batting streak, but he has just 5 RBI over his last 19 games. Luke Scott went 1 for 4 and scored two runs. He is batting .467-6-12 over his last 12 games and is batting .386 in May. O's starting pitchers have worked to an ERA of 3.59 over the last ten games. That mark is 2.54 if you could take away the seven runs Brian Matusz allowed Thursday vs. Texas. Alfredo Simon picked up his sixth save in seven chances. He needed 13 pitches to record the save and each of his six saves have come in one-inning outings. Off the schneid: Starter David Hernandez allowed just one run and one hit over 5 1/3 as he picked up his first win since August 11, 2009 vs. Oakland. Hernandez had been 0-11 over his last 16 starts. He has given up four runs in 11 innings in two career starts vs. the Nats. The O's have had 21 of their 43 games decided by one or two runs and are 9-12 in those contests. Nats starter Scott Olsen left the game with tightness in his left shoulder. He entered the contest allowing just 4 ER over 32 1/3 in a five-start stretch, then gave up 4 ER over three innings on Friday night. The Nationals fell to 21-22 with the loss and under the .500 mark for the first time since April 15. The Nationals, who have lost seven of their last eight games, are 12-10 at home and 8-12 in May. Saturday at 4:05, Brad Bergesen (3-3, 5.45) pitches vs. Washington's Craig Stammen (1-2, 5.86). Bergesen is 1-0, 3.86 in two career starts vs. the Nationals.
