Random Orioles notes

The Orioles have been viewed as the favorites to host the 2016 All-Star Game, but I'm told that it's not going to happen.

The club hasn't been officially notified, but a source says it won't be played at Camden Yards.

The Orioles last hosted the All-Star Game in 1993, one year after the ballpark opened. The 2015 All-Star Game will be played in Cincinnati, and the Nationals are expected to host it in 2017.

The leagues traditionally alternate hosting it and Baltimore was deemed the most likely site in 2016. Commissioner Bud Selig, who will retire Jan. 24, referred to Baltimore as a "very, very viable candidate."

One more "very" might have sealed the deal.

Major League Baseball doesn't seem to have much desire to do the Orioles any favors these days.

Teams don't normally make a formal presentation to host the All-Star Game and word comes down from the commissioner's office without much fanfare. There's no designated date for the announcement.

The Blue Jays, Athletics and Rays are the only other American League teams that haven't hosted the game since 1993, and MLB doesn't figure to be in any hurry to showcase stadiums in Oakland and St. Petersburg.

If the Orioles get the chance to host the game again, they need to arrange for Mike Mussina to warm up in the bullpen. It's got to be his idea, though.

Here are a few fun facts while we wait for the Orioles to make more roster moves:

norris-pitching-front-gray-sidebar.jpgBud Norris (2.44 ERA in 13 starts) and Chris Tillman (2.56 ERA in 18 starts) produced the two lowest single season ERAs by Orioles starting pitchers with a minimum of five starts in Camden Yards history.

Closer Zach Britton led all relievers in ground ball-to-fly ball ratio (6.68) and groundball percentage (75.8).

Left-hander Wei-Yin Chen's 35 walks in 185 2/3 innings were the fewest by an Orioles pitcher in a single season in club history with at least 175 innings.

Chen's 1.70 walks per nine innings ranked third in club history.

The Orioles went 14-6 in games that Alejandro De Aza played after he was acquired from the White Sox on Aug. 30.

De Aza hit safely in his first eight games as an Oriole, the longest streak since Eric Byrnes hit in 11 straight in 2005.

Ryan Flaherty has gone 0-for-17 to start the last two seasons.

Kevin Gausman's 3.18 ERA in nine road starts was the second-lowest among American League rookies with a minimum of eight starts.

Gausman's streak of three consecutive starts with at least seven innings pitched and seven strikeouts was the longest by an Oriole since Erik Bedard in 2007.

Miguel Gonzalez went 5-2 with a 2.78 ERA in 12 starts against the American League East.

Shortstop J.J. Hardy batted .315 with 42 RBIs in 107 plate appearances with runners in scoring position.

Hardy's 86 home runs since 2011 are the most among all major league shortstops.

Ubaldo Jimenez posted a 3.40 ERA in 16 night starts.

Adam Jones batted .344 against left-handers to rank 10th in the majors. His 1.003 OPS ranked ninth.

Brian Matusz had a 1.23 ERA in his last 27 appearances beginning July 3, walking four batters and striking out 29.

T.J. McFarland had a 0.79 ERA in his final 10 appearances beginning Aug. 16.

Norris is 4-0 with a 0.43 ERA in six career starts against the Angels.

Darren O'Day posted a 0.61 ERA in 14 appearances with no rest, a 1.96 ERA in 21 appearances with one day's rest and a 2.03 ERA in 33 appearances with two or more days rest.

Opponents batted .089 against O'Day in 69 plate appearances with runners in scoring position.

The Orioles went 14-1 when Jonathan Schoop homered.

Teams are 2-for-13 trying to steal bases off Tillman since the beginning of 2013.
