Reimold hits first leadoff home run, Mancini a hit with Orioles (O's win 4-3)

Nolan Reimold reached base four times as the leadoff hitter in Game 1, and he homered in his first at-bat from the same slot in Game 2.

Reimold seems to like the view from atop the order.

This is Reimold's first career leadoff home run and the sixth for the Orioles this season. He drove a 94 mph fastball from Yankees starter Luis Severino into the seats in left-center field after taking a 93 mph fastball for a strike.

Gerardo Parra followed with a single, giving him five hits in the doubleheader, but he was out trying to steal second.

Chris Davis was hit on the foot with two outs in what could be his next-to-last game with the Orioles, and he raced home on Steve Pearce's double to increase the lead to 2-0. The Yankees got a run back in the top of the second on Didi Gregorius' sacrifice fly off Ubaldo Jimenez.

Perhaps the Orioles' first baseman of the future is here to watch Davis.

The Orioles honored their minor league award winners earlier today, including Double-A Bowie first baseman Trey Mancini, who was named Player of the Year. Mancini, an eighth-round pick in 2013 out of Notre Dame, batted .314/.341/.527 with 14 doubles, three triples, eight home runs and 32 RBIs in 52 games at Single-A Frederick and .359/.395/.586 with 29 doubles, three triples, 13 home runs and 57 RBIs in 84 games at Bowie.

The jump from the Carolina League to the Eastern League figured to be a little more challenging. Mancini made it look easy.

"It was slightly," he said. "Early on, I got challenged with fastballs a lot and I think it was because people really didn't know who I was at the Double-A Level. I knew they would change the way they pitched to me after that and I had to adjust accordingly. They started throwing first-pitch breaking balls, I would sit on it sometimes and not really miss the pitches they would make. They left some pitches up in the zone and i tried to take advantage of those, too.

"My main focus going into this year was to relax just mentally and have a good approach going up to the plate. I had gotten in my own head at times, and this year I just tried to let it all go. Really, just take it one pitch at a time, as cliche as that is. It's really important to not look to far in the future or past at-bats. I think taking it day-by-day really helped me out this year."

His immediate future may not include playing for the Orioles, but he may as well set 2016 as a goal.

"I think it's a realistic possibility, and I'm going to work very hard this offseason to try to make it one," he said.

"I really don't pay much attention to it. Honestly, my whole approach this year has been to focus on myself. You can't really control anything that goes on, so I'm just trying to focus on myself and I think everything will just take care of myself if i just do that."

Mancini knows his defense has to keep improving to increase his chances. It's a requirement in Baltimore.

"I would say that's the aspect of the game I've improved the most on since I got drafted," he said. "To be honest, I might overexaggerate a little bit, but when I got drafted I say I was kind of a bull in the china shop a little, going 100 miles an hour. Not that I didn't make plays, but I looked rushed and didn't account for how much time I had out there. So, just trying to make it look more smooth."

He looks fine to the Orioles, who knew he was the obvious choice for the award.

"I always knew that I had the talent that I maybe displayed this year and didn't reach that totally, especially from a power standpoint," he said. "That really started to come together this year. I think a lot of that came from, I had a change of stance. In spring training I worked with Brady Anderson. I was lower and more flexed on my legs before. Now, I'm just standing straight up.

"I feel really, really relaxed with that approach and I'm hitting the ball out in front, getting some better trajectory on it. So, that helped me out a lot, too."

Update: Manny Machado homered in the third inning - his fifth in four games - but the Yankees scored twice in the fifth to tie the score.

Slade Heathcott had an RBI double and Carlos Beltran walked with the bases loaded. Jimenez has thrown 92 pitches in five innings.

Update II: Paul Janish scored on a wild pitch by Dellin Betances to give the Orioles a 4-3 lead in the eighth. Janish singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and took third on Parra's bunt single.

Parra has six hits in the doubleheader. Zach Britton is warming.

Update III: The Orioles sweep the doubleheader with a 4-3 win. They're one game below .500 with one remaining.

Zach Britton recorded his 36th save. T.J McFarland earned his second win in three games with two perfect innings.

The Orioles are 46-31 at home and 25-26 in one-run games.
