Right-hander Suero advances to Potomac, continues to impress

Right-hander Wander Suero was called up to high Single-A Potomac last week. And for good reason. All he has been is impressive. Suero went 3-0 with one save and a 1.98 ERA in six games for the low Single-A Hagerstown Suns. In 27 1/3 innings, Suero allowed 24 hits, six earned runs, two walks and struck out 19 batters. Suero also went 8-1 with a 1.65 ERA for the Rookie-level champion Gulf Coast Nationals last season, striking out 46 batters in 49 innings over 13 games. The 2010 non-drafted free agent is one of the many Dominican players that I believe are going to start making noise in the Nationals system. Hagerstown manager Patrick Anderson, who also was Suero's skipper for the 52-9 GCL Nats last season, said the right-hander has an attitude that he will go after you from his first pitch. "What he did for us last year was a little ridiculous, to be honest with you," Anderson said. "He comes at you. Fastball, here it is. Breaking ball, have fun trying it. He has got a good changeup. He is non-stop, he is relentless on the mound." The 6-foot-3, 175 lb. Suero has a 1.69 ERA for the P-Nats in one appearance, tossing 5 1/3 innings May 8 in relief. Suero scattered seven hits, but allowed only one run and one walk, with three strikeouts. Anderson said it was a special moment to be able to tell Suero he had graduated to the next level because he had seen where the 22-year-old had started when he had him in rookie ball. "It is a warm feeling for me personally to be able to tell him he is going up because he deserves every bit of it," Anderson said. "Seeing him develop from last year to the beginning parts of this year, he deserves that opportunity. I am excited for him. "I think he had five innings of really quality pitching on the back end of a lopsided game (in his first outing for Potomac). So I am excited to be able to see how he does up there."
