Brian Roberts didn't receive a loud ovation tonight as he stepped to the plate with two outs in the top of the second inning. He wasn't booed vigorously.
Roberts' first at-bat at Camden Yards as a Yankee was mostly met with a collective shrug.
I heard a few boos. I heard some polite applause that ended quickly. That was it.
How did Roberts react? By hitting the first pitch he saw from Miguel Gonzalez onto the flag court in right field to give New York a 1-0 lead.
Roberts has five home runs this season. I'm guessing that he enjoyed this one a little more than the others, though he'd never admit it.
Roberts has hit 45 homers at Camden Yards. Tonight's shot looked and felt different, of course.
Gonzalez started off Roberts with a 92 mph fastball. He didn't get a chance to follow it up.
Gonzalez retired the first five Yankees before Roberts homered. Ichiro Suzuki followed with a double before Yangervis Solarte popped up.
Kelly Johnson led off the third inning with his sixth home run of the season, on a 90 mph fastball that also was launched to right field. He's now 5-for-12 with two homers lifetime against Gonzalez.
Yankees 2, Orioles 0
Gonzalez allowed one earned run (two total) in his last start in Boston, when he matched his career-high by going eight innings.
Hiroki Kuroda has retired the first six Orioles.
Update: The Orioles tied the score 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth with the aid of two hit batters and two wild pitches from Kuroda.
Adam Jones singled and Chris Davis lifted a sacrifice fly in the inning.
Gonzalez has thrown 60 pitches in four innings. The Yankees put runners on second and third with one out in the fourth and couldn't score.
Update II: Gonzalez has retired 11 of the last 12 batters, the only glitch coming in the seventh when he hit Johnson in the back with two outs.
The game remains tied and Gonzalez is at 101 pitches, 65 for strikes. T.J. McFarland is warming in the Orioles' bullpen, so Gonzalez may be done.
Update III: Gonzalez wasn't done. He retired the side in order on five pitches to complete eight innings for the second consecutive start.
Gonzalez has allowed four runs (three earned) in his last two starts over 16 innings. Zach Britton is now warming for the Orioles.
Update IV: Nick Hundley lined a single to center field off reliever Adam Warren to score Manny Machado and give the Orioles a 3-2, 10-inning win over the Yankees before 45,389.
Machado led off with a double and stayed at second as Ryan Flaherty struck out. Hundley lined a 2-2 pitch to center, his second hit of the night.
T.J. McFarland retired the side in order in the top of the 10th and earns the win.
The Orioles are 51-41 overall and 9-3 in extras.
