Schoop homers in intrasquad game (Young and Davis homer)

SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles are expected to option infielder Jonathan Schoop to Triple-A Norfolk rather than place him on the opening day roster, but he's not conceding anything. Schoop hit a long two-run homer off Steve Johnson in the top of the second inning of today's intrasquad game, giving the visiting team a 2-0 lead. Johnson struggled to find the plate, walking three batters and reaching his pitch limit of 20 with two outs. Manager Buck Showalter halted the inning after Henry Urrutia drew a free pass. Urrutia didn't walk in 58 plate appearances with the Orioles last season. Steve Pearce and Nolan Reimold also walked in the second inning. Francisco Peguero grounded into a double after Pearce reached. Schoop followed Reimold's walk with a blast to left field on the first pitch. Johnson threw 20 pitches, seven for strikes. Kevin Gausman threw 17 pitches, 12 strikes, in the top of the first. Steve Clevenger singled with one out. Brian Matusz opened the bottom of the first by striking out Chris Davis on four pitches before Ryan Flaherty singled. Matusz threw 13 pitches, 11 for strikes. Xavier Paul made a nice running catch in left field to rob Alex Gonzalez. Brad Brach gave up a leadoff single to Adam Jones in the bottom of the second before retiring the next three batters. Brach threw nine pitches, eight for strikes. Brock Huntzinger retired all three batters he faced in the top of the third on grounders to J.J. Hardy while throwing all six pitches for strikes. Ryan Webb also induced three ground balls to Hardy while retiring the side in order on eight pitches, five for strikes. Mike Wright struck out Peguero while retiring the side in order in the top of the fourth. Wright threw 12 pitches, six for strikes. Jemile Weeks made a leaping catch at second base to rob Pearce. Update: Nick Additon faced six batters in the top of the fifth and retired only one before Showalter halted the inning. The visiting team - known as O's - scored twice to take a 4-0 lead. Michael Almanzar and Clevenger had RBI singles. Reimold, Urrutia and Ivan DeJesus Jr. also singled in the inning. Left fielder David Lough threw out Urrutia at third base. The other out came on a Schoop liner to left. He's smoked the ball twice today. Eduardo Rodriguez didn't allow a run in the bottom of the fourth, but only because Urrutia threw out Julio Borbon at the plate. Borbon reached on an infield hit, Lough walked and Nick Markakis singled to right field. Rodriguez began the inning by striking out Alex Gonzalez. He threw 15 pitches, eight for strikes. Update II: Delmon Young and Chris Davis hit back-to-back homers off Edger Escalona in the bottom of the fifth to reduce the O's lead to 4-2. Young's ball carried over the fence in left-center field. Davis took a pitch to left. Yes, the wind is blowing out to left. Escalona reached his pitch count after only three batters. He struck out Caleb Joseph leading off the inning. Knuckleballer Eddie Gamboa gave up a leadoff single to Paul in the top of the sixth, but he struck out Steve Pearce. Catcher Brian Ward threw out Paul trying to steal and Peguero bounced out.
