Showalter on Gausman, Jones and 4-3 victory

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said he wasn't anticipating any trade news later tonight. It's probably safe to go to bed.

First baseman Chris Davis showed up at Camden Yards during tonight's game and could return to the lineup on Thursday. He's been sick for the past three days.

"We'll see how Chris Davis feels tomorrow," Showalter said following the Orioles' 4-3 win over the Angels at Camden Yards. "The doc checked on him. He's getting there. He's not there yet. I hope tomorrow he's all the way back."

Also, left-hander T.J. McFarland will fly into Baltimore Thursday morning and come off the bereavement list. Reliever Preston Guilmet most likely will be optioned to Triple-A Norfolk for the sixth time this season.

As for tonight's game, Kevin Gausman retired the first 14 Angels before walking the bases loaded with two outs in the fifth and surrendering three runs.

What happened?

"I don't want to incriminate myself," Showalter said, referring to plate umpire Kerwin Danley's tight strike zone.

Was Gausman thinking about the no-hitter?

"I don't think so," Showalter said. "I was thinking about it. Just look up there and saw the zero and hoped it continued. I was trying to figure out if he'd have enough pitches to do it with. A lot of borderline pitches that weren't going his way and it kind of snowballed on him. I was more impressed how he came out and pitched the next two innings. As impressed.

"Really good defensive game for us I thought was the difference. Manny (Machado) made two good plays and Stevie (Pearce) made two good plays and Nicky (Markakis) made a great play. Caleb (Joseph) made a great throw and (Ryan) Flaherty made a great tag. Other than the good pitching, that was the difference in the game."

Machado ended the game by charging Howie Kendrick's slow roller and making the barehanded pickup and throw to first, but he really dazzled in the fourth with his backhanded stop of Albert Pujols' bouncer and throw from deep in foul territory.

Showalter didn't give Machado a perfect 10.

"Well, Manny will tell you, looking back on it, he probably wished he set his feet and threw over the top. But I'll take it," Showalter said. "I'm not going to handicap that one. What's great is he has the skills to do either one."

The Orioles are 10-1 when Adam Jones homers in the first inning, the latest shot coming tonight off Angels right-hander Garrett Richards. Is there any logic to it?

"What's illogical is hitting it off that guy," Showalter said. "He's impressive. There were two good young pitchers out there tonight and a fine margin of error. Once he established that breaking ball, really both of them, it's not a very comfortable at-bat. But Gausman was able to match him.

"Two good guys, two good-looking pitchers. You're trying to win a game but you're also a fan of the game and you see two guys like that pitching and you say, 'Geez.' I wouldn't say 'fun' but it's entertaining to watch. It's not entertaining to hit.

"Adam's had a lot of big hits. Obviously, more attention is paid to the one that leaves the ballpark, but I don't know if that was any bigger than the doubles he hit in Seattle. I could go through 20 different hits. You don't know how the game's going to end up there."

David Lough had an RBI double and scored in the fourth.

"David Lough has very quietly been putting together some good at-bats," Showalter said. "He's stung the ball about every time we've put him out there in the last couple of weeks. I really wanted to give him a start tonight. I'd like to get Delmon in the field tomorrow."

A reporter asked Showalter about Gausman and Dylan Bundy being the heart of the organization, two pitchers the Orioles won't trade. Showalter wouldn't single them out.

"We've got a lot of arteries to that heart," he said. "The heart is the people up in the stands, and Dan (Duquette) believes that, too. Anytime you're doing something that people watch, you really want to deliver for them.

"Gonzo (Miguel Gonzalez) has been pitching well, (Wei-Yin) Chen has been pitching well for us. We've been able to stay where we are because of the pitching. Tilly (Chris Tillman), everybody. Bullpen. It's a sum of the parts."
