Showalter on Gonzalez and a 3-2, 10-inning win

The Orioles have won four consecutive extra-inning games, improving to 9-3 beyond regulation. Starting to feel a little bit like 2012? Nick Hundley's walk-off single in the 10th gave the Orioles a 3-2 victory over the Yankees before a sellout crowd of 45,389 at Camden Yards. Hundley extended his hitting streak to eight games. He's 12-for-32 (.375) with three doubles, two home runs, six RBIs and eight runs during that stretch. The Orioles are 10 games above .500 for the first time since Sept. 17, 2013. The Orioles posted their seventh walk-off win and the first since June 25 against the White Sox. They're 8-4 in games that are tied after the eighth inning and 5-2 at home. They've outscored opponents 45-26 in the ninth inning and beyond. Miguel Gonzalez tied his career-high by completing eight innings for the second consecutive start. Zach Britton hasn't permitted a run in his last 10 outings since the four-run beatdown in the Bronx. His scoreless-inning streak at home was extended to 31 1/3. T.J. McFarland retired the Yankees in order in the 10th on three ground balls and earned the win. Here's manager Buck Showalter: On Gonzalez "Early on it didn't look like it was going to be an eight-inning outing. He got ambushed a couple times with some first-pitch fastballs, but he was really good after that. He got stronger as the game went on. He was trying to pull a (Chris) Tillman hide from me after the eighth inning, but I was able to get him. A little bit of a push there in the eighth. He was kind of going hitter-to-hitter there. He was good. His split is a pitch that's been there for him when he's been effective and tonight was a good example. When they've got that many left-handed hitters in the lineup, you have to have something like that to get them off you a little bit." On Hundley "When you look at the history with Nick, he can contribute offensively. It's hard to sit around for a couple days. That's why we're trying to keep both (Hundley and Caleb Joseph) engaged. We're going to need them both. We're fortunate with Matt (Wieters) out to have, really, four guys we can use up here. I think everybody feels really good for Nick, because he's a consummate team player. I think he feels real good about being here and fortunate to be in a race to be competitive. He's a pretty sincere guy. He's a football coach's son and he approaches it that way." On key to being 9-3 in extras "Usually, it's pitching and the bullpen doing well. Zach had a big inning for us. Mac very quietly has become a real contributor for us. I was trying to shorten Mac up to one so we've got him out of the 'pen the next two days. Trying to give Brian Matusz one more day. So, we've got a lot of guys who are shouldering the load and we're able to pass it around and not tax anybody." More on extras "If we were that good, we'd do it before extra innings. But sometimes the other team is good, too. (Hiroki) Kuroda was really good, and of course (Dellin) Betances is having one of the best years of any reliever in baseball, so you've got to match that type of pitching in order to have a chance, and we've been able to do that in extra-inning games." On why he didn't send up Delmon Young for Hundley "It's a tie game, we're not behind, and Nick is engaged in the sequences versus the hitters. All the things that have gone on in the previous at-bats, without trying to make somebody look bad, there are some tendencies with (Adam) Warren that may not fit our pinch-hitters." On scoring twice in bottom of fourth "We were fortunate there to push a couple across. We got a little help. Everybody's got a hiccup inning. Miguel had a couple. You just don't throw your glove and your hat out there and people bow at your feet. This is a tough place. These are the best players in the world. I think one of the key elements of the game tonight was Chris Davis' plays - plural - at first base. We are so fortunate to have a right-handed guy that we don't have to play guys on the line in that double situation because of his range glove-side. That play he made on the bunt, he may be one of the few guys in baseball who can make that play and has the guts to make it. So, the contributions he made tonight were as big as anybody on the field." On whether he's impressed that Orioles are 10 games over .500 "No. If you look at the history of where people normally are to get to play in the postseason, we're going to have to do a little better."
