Showalter on the expanded roster and Machado, plus the Rays' lineup

Orioles manager Buck Showalter isn't offering many hints about his September call-ups. He hasn't provided a number or any names. However, he indicated that the club will add one or more players who aren't currently on the 40-man roster. The Orioles have one opening after designating infielder Cord Phelps for assignment, and they can transfer third baseman Manny Machado to the 60-day disabled list. "The question is, are we calling up anybody who's on the roster?" Showalter said, grinning. Showalter said he anticipates adding players who haven't been with the club this season. "They're on the radar," he said. "We've met about it a couple times already." casilla-fielding-white-sidebar.jpgInfielder Alexi Casilla is one possibility. The Orioles considered him before selecting Phelps' contract from Triple-A Norfolk on Aug. 13. Casilla may have gotten the call if he had made more progress following surgery to remove a broken hamate bone. He's returned to Norfolk after playing four games at short-season Single-A Aberdeen. Machado doesn't expect to join the Orioles following his knee surgery this week unless they make the playoffs. Machado will spend a few weeks in Los Angeles before continuing his rehabilitation in Sarasota. "He's been here before during the playoffs. It's not a prerequisite," Showalter said. "If it runs its normal course and everything the doctor finds says they can proceed with the surgery on Wednesday - that's not a given yet because they've got to go through some avenues - two to three weeks rehab out there and then he's going to do the rehab in Sarasota with Dave Walker. "He's a good deal ahead of the last one, so hopefully he's going to have a regular spring training. I think that was a challenge for him this year. But whether he's here or not, the most important thing is that he's serving the rehab properly. "We're going to expand the roster somewhat here in the next week and you don't expand the trainers too much. There are only so many people you can treat properly." The Orioles again will add Norfolk manager Ron Johnson and pitching coach Mike Griffin to their coaching staff next month. Johnson and Griffin will be allowed to spend some time at home before coming up. Director of player development Brian Graham will join the staff during the first week in September and accompany the team to Tampa before heading over to Sarasota to oversee the instructional league. "I'm excited about our our ownership group letting us have another instructional league. That doesn't happen everywhere," Showalter said. "That's huge for us, to be able to take all these guys down to instructional league." The Orioles were one-hit yesterday for the second time this season. It also happened Aug. 6 in Toronto. This is the first season in which the Orioles have been held to one or no hits since 1991. They were no-hit by the White Sox on Aug. 11 and rationed to one hit by the Blue Jays on Aug. 28.
