Showalter provides injury updates (O's down 6-2)

NEW YORK - The Orioles are terming reliever Darren O'Day's injury as a right shoulder strain, putting him on the disabled list retroactive to Wednesday.

"That's the kind of thing I alluded to a little bit lightly the last couple days about availability," said manager Buck Showalter. "It's something that's been bothering him a little bit the last couple days. He had good outings, he's been pitching well. It's unfortunate."

O'Day has allowed two runs in his last nine appearances, and his fastball climbed to 90 mph. Showalter has backed off O'Day at various points, but the soreness returned to his shoulder.

"It's tough because we've done, I think, a really good job of protecting him like we do with all our pitchers, and that's a little concerning when you have that and still have some issues," Showalter said.

"We could wait day-to-day-to-day and keep waiting, but then he goes out and pitches and if it flares back up ... We'll take these seven or eight days and see if we can put it behind him.

"I think he threw the next-to-last game against Pittsburgh. Basically, we've been waiting for a couple of days. He didn't feel well after his last outing. He had, what, two or three days off before that? That's a little concerning."

Showalter said third baseman Manny Machado, out of the lineup again today with a strained left wrist, is "a little better."

"Still pretty sore. Limited availability," Showalter said.

"We'll reach a point with Manny where (if) we don't feel he can play every day ... You really want to get going. It's going to be OK tomorrow, and then it gets sore in a game when he plays. We're reaching a point where we're going to have to make a decision there, too.

"Obviously, Manny and Darren are worth waiting for. That's why we waited a couple of days on Darren. The same thing with Manny."

Center fielder Adam Jones made it back into the lineup after sitting out last night's loss in D.C. with general soreness, particularly in his legs.

"Adam feels fine, feels good," Showalter said. "A lot better than yesterday, so he's going to play tonight."

Another roster move is expected Saturday, with catcher Welington Castillo likely coming off the disabled list. Castillo is in Trenton tonight with Double-A Bowie for an extremely short rehab assignment.

"He had a car pick him up at 2 o'clock. Seventy-one miles to Thunder Road. I had to look up the address for him," Showalter said.

"He's going to take BP for them and play three to four at-bats, six to seven innings. And if that goes well, that's the last piece. If that goes well, he'll be active tomorrow."

The news on closer Zach Britton remains encouraging as he continues to throw in Sarasota.

"He's had two full bullpens and one half-mound, so throwing BP is around the corner," Showalter said. "I think he's got one more bullpen session, then he throws BP next week. Everything's progressing well there."

Dr. Michael Jacobs cleared infielder Ryan Flaherty to begin throwing.

"He can get right on the program. That's good news," Showalter said. "Ryan's the type of guy that sometimes people don't realize all the things he does for us until he's not here."

Update: Jonathan Schoop hit a long two-run homer off Jordan Montgomery in the top of the second inning to give the Orioles a 2-0 lead, but the Yankees scored twice off Dylan Bundy in the bottom half on Starlin Castro's leadoff home run and Chase Headley's sacrifice fly.

Bundy hasn't allowed a hit since Gary Sánchez's double with no outs in the second. We're now in the bottom of the sixth.

Update II: Aaron Hicks homered to lead off the bottom of the sixth and give the Yankees a 3-2 lead.

Update III: The Yankees scored three runs off Edwin Jackson in the seventh, beginning with Hicks' second homer of the night, to increase the lead to 6-2.

All three runs were unearned after Jackson committed a throwing error.
