O'Day headed to the disabled list (and other notes)

NEW YORK - The Orioles are placing reliever Darren O'Day on the 10-day disabled list with soreness in his right shoulder. Reliever Stefan Crichton has been recalled and he's headed to the Bronx for tonight's game.

O'Day also was bothered with a sore shoulder last month and didn't pitch for seven days. He's allowed only two runs in his last nine appearances, but the shoulder flared up again after Tuesday night's game against the Pirates.

ODay Delivers Orange Wide.jpgO"Day tried to throw on the field this afternoon and the Orioles didn't like the results. They decided that they couldn't continue to back off him, which necessitated the roster move.

Raising the level of concern is how O'Day hadn't pitched for three days before facing the Pirates, and taking a few days off after allowing a run in the ninth inning didn't alleviate the soreness.

O'Day is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 24 appearances. This is his third trip to the disabled list, and the second involving his shoulder, since the Orioles re-signed him to a four-year, $31 million deal on Dec. 14, 2015.

Crichton is hopping back on the shuttle. He's 3-0 with a 1.37 ERA and 0.84 WHIP in 12 games with Norfolk. He tossed three scoreless innings with three strikeouts on Monday.

Crichton has posted a 6.48 ERA and 2.04 WHIP in five games with the Orioles over 8 1/3 innings. Opponents are batting .432.

Third baseman Manny Machado's left wrist and hand are a little better today, but the Orioles may need to make a decision on him by Saturday. They can't keep going day-to-day and playing short an infielder.

Catcher Welington Castillo is in Trenton tonight with Double-A Bowie and figures to come off the disabled list before Saturday night's game.

Closer Zach Britton has thrown two full bullpen sessions down in Sarasota. He's scheduled for one more before throwing batting practice.

Infielder Ryan Flaherty was cleared to throw yesterday while recovering from a strained right shoulder.
