Showalter names his starter for Friday and updates Gonzalez

CHICAGO - Part of the Orioles rotation has started to take shape for the weekend series against the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Manager Buck Showalter said Kevin Gausman will start Friday's opener, keeping the right-hander on normal rest. The next two spots haven't been announced. Showalter won't reveal his plans for Ubaldo Jimenez, who allowed six runs over 4 1/3 innings Saturday night in Cleveland. "We're not there yet," Showalter said, adding that Jimenez will hear it from him first. miguel-gonzalez-white-front-windup-sidebar.jpgMiguel Gonzalez threw five innings and 75 pitches today in a simulated game at Double-A Bowie. He could join the Orioles this weekend, with his role to be determined. "It went real well today," Showalter said. "He did a lot of offensive work, too. It was a good work day for him. He's prepared to do what we might need. "He had three or four hitters, a catcher. He had an umpire, too. We were really simulating." Gonzalez could throw a bullpen session at Bowie. "It depends on our needs," Showalter said. "If it looks like we're going to have a need in the bullpen, then he probably wouldn't, but if we get to the point where it looks like we're going to be able to get through the off-day without a need, then he probably would take it there." Chris Davis is getting another start at third base tonight despite the White Sox starting left-hander Chris Sale. "From what we have to pick from, not many guys have more experience at third base than Chris," Showalter said, "and we want to keep the versatility that (Cord) Phelps gives us by being able to move around if we have a need over the course of the game. "It's going to be tough off Sale tonight for everybody, but hopefully Chris can build on that. He's got his work cut out for him." Showalter's question of the day: "Why do they have a velocity gun at the Little League World Series?" "You want to help me with that one?" Showalter asked. "What purpose does that serve? And we wonder why we have problems. "The people putting the (radar) gun up there are the first ones to complain about overuse. So why are you putting the gun up there? And it's still the guy who's able to locate who wins those games." Or the girl.
