Showalter updates Wade Miley's status, plus other notes

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Left-hander Vidal Nuño is starting today's game here for the Orioles against the Red Sox at JetBlue Park. The scheduled starter, left-hander Wade Miley, was scratched due to illness. He has flu-like symptoms.

Miley has pitched just nine innings over four spring starts, but manager Buck Showalter doesn't feel his status to begin the year in the rotation is an issue due to missing this outing. It could be several days before he pitches again.

Miley-Throws-White-Sidebar.jpg"He's fine (to start the year)," Showalter said before the game. "This was the one that was kind of built in. Roger (McDowell), I and Alan (Mills) were sitting down last night kind of going over the rotation for April. Three scenarios that we are looking at. At this point, it doesn't effect it. At this point.

"He looks rough. We thought he was over it, but he had a relapse, I guess. He came over here last night. So that is about five innings we have to cover."

The Orioles already had minor league pitchers Brian Moran, Jefri Hernandez, Michael Zouzalik, Luis Gonzalez and Cody Satterwhite here. But with Oliver Drake the only other pitcher here, they called two more pitchers to come over from minor league camp. As reporters spoke to Showalter just minutes before first pitch, Stefan Crichton and Scott McGough were on their way here.

In other notes:

* The Orioles upcoming rotation shows Ubaldo Jiménez pitching tomorrow against Toronto and Chris Lee on Wednesday versus Tampa Bay. On Thursday's off-day, Dylan Bundy will pitch in a minor league game with Mike Wright pitching Friday and Gabriel Ynoa on Saturday. This is subject to change if they can get Miley back in there sooner than Sunday. Also, Kevin Gausman will pitch Friday in a minor league game.

* Zach Britton is pitching an inning today at Twins Lakes Park in a minor league game.

* The Orioles may have three more roster cuts coming tomorrow.

* Showalter is still uncertain when Manny Machado and Welington Castillo will rejoin the team now that the Dominican Republic is out of the World Baseball Classic. It looks like their first game back could be Friday, possibly sooner.

Game update: Boston leads 5-1 after two innings. Hanley Ramirez had an RBI single in the first and added another RBI hit in the second when the Red Sox scored four runs. After Boston took that 1-0 lead in the first, Pedro Álvarez hit a solo homer to right to tie it in the Orioles' second. It was Álvarez's third homer in four games (counting one in a B game) since he re-signed with the club.

Nuño lasted just 1 2/3 innings and was charged with four hits and three runs. He walked one and fanned two. Oliver Drake replaced him with runners on second and third in the second and two outs, and allowed three straight hits, scoring four runs. Pablo Sandoval had a two-run double, Mookie Betts an RBI double and Ramirez his second RBI single.

Álvarez was involved with one play in right field in the last of the second. With two outs and a man on first, Marco Hernández doubled to right on a liner just in front of Álvarez. He charged in and played it on a bounce, knocking the ball down and keeping it near him. But not close enough to keep Hernández from hustling into second base.
