Steve Lombardozzi on opening day, his O's debut and more

After being traded twice since the end of last season, infielder Steve Lombardozzi would like to find a home with the Orioles. The Fulton, Md., native, and graduate of Atholton High School near Baltimore in Columbia, played the last three seasons for the Nationals. He was traded by Washington to Detroit in the Doug Fister deal and then Detroit traded him to the Orioles March 24 for Alex Gonzalez. He enjoyed his first opening day as an Oriole on Monday and tonight he makes his debut with the team. "I'm excited. Definitely have some nerves, but very excited to get out there and help this team win," Lombardozzi said. "It was very cool being out there opening day. I came to a couple of them growing up. To actually be out there and run on the carpet from center field was pretty cool." Lombardozzi's father, Steve, played six seasons in the majors for Minnesota and Houston. He is now the baseball coach at Good Counsel High School in Olney, Md. A .264 hitter in 257 career major league games, Lombardozzi is ready to help the Orioles any way he can. "Kind of what I've been doing the last couple years," Lombardozzi said. "I will do the little things to help us win. Whether it's getting a guy over, getting a bunt down, stealing a base. I take pride in those things. There are some talented players in this lineup so I'm just trying to get on base for these guys and score as many runs as I can." He can play several positions on the diamond, including the outfield, but said he is most comfortable at second, where he will play tonight. He is enjoying his first few days as an Oriole and said he loves the atmosphere in the O's clubhouse. "I love the feel of it. Guys are loose. It's definitely a loose and fun clubhouse. But at the same time, when it's time to work, you know, guys are ready to go," he said.
