Be ready early: Orioles' April schedule is brutal

Be ready early: Orioles' April schedule is brutal
When the 2018 season begins, the Orioles will be afforded no time to ease into the action. The early season schedule is tough and littered with 2017 playoff teams. Of the 15 American League teams, just five finished over .500 last year and they were all playoff teams. Cleveland won 102 games, Houston won 101 on its way to the World Series title, Boston won 93, New York won 91 and Minnesota 85. Of their first seven series of the 2018 season, the Orioles play each of those five teams once. They...

Where the AL East stands before the Winter Meetings

Where the AL East stands before the Winter Meetings
We are not breaking any news here when we say the Orioles need starting pitching - at least three starters and certainly more - if they are going to be contenders in the 2018 American League East. The Orioles have Kevin Gausman, who pitched well in the second half after a lousy first half in 2017, and Dylan Bundy at the top of the rotation, but after that, it's all question marks. Baltimore is in catch-up mode. The New York Yankees, who unexpectedly came one win away from making the World...

O's game blog: Can Ynoa slow the New York offense?

O's game blog: Can Ynoa slow the New York offense?
As the Orioles look to get their offense going again, tonight they face the challenge of New York Yankees right-hander Luis Severino (12-6, 2.96 ERA). Severino is third in the American League in ERA, opponents batting average (.209) and WHIP (1.05) and fourth with 211 strikeouts. He has been even better than his overall stats in the second half. The 23-year-old Severino is 7-2 with a 2.07 ERA in 11 starts since the break. That is the best ERA in the league in that time and he has given up one...

O's game blog: O's have allowed 68 runs in six games at Yankee Stadium
As the Orioles begin a four-game series in the Bronx tonight, to say the least, the Orioles need to start pitching better against New York. The Orioles trail 9-6 in the season series. They have a combined 7.49 team ERA in those games and New York is batting .315/.412/.573 against Baltimore pitching with 36 homers and a team OPS of .985 in the 15 games. The Yankees have scored 120 runs in those games and that is the highest total by any team against any opponent this season. New York's 8.00...

O's game blog: Notes on Austin Hays, Alex Wells and more
Tonight's Orioles-Yankees game will not start on time. As of about 6:40 p.m. it was raining steadily at Oriole Park and the tarp is on the field. No start time was announced and we'll keep you posted when we hear any updates. Earlier today, the Orioles announced that Single-A Delmarva lefty Alex Wells has been named their minor league Pitcher of the Year, winning the Jim Palmer Award. The 20-year left-hander from Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia finished 11-5 with a 2.38 ERA for the...

Where the American League postseason race stands

Where the American League postseason race stands
With less than two months to go, there's not a lot of drama in the National League races. The Nationals most likely will play either the Cubs, Brewers or surging Cardinals in the Division Series, while the Dodgers will play the winner of the projected Diamondbacks-Rockies wild card game. The American League is more complex. Teams are bunched and a .500 record keeps a team thinking October. The Orioles are contenders even though they were seven games under on July 16. The Orioles' schedule...

Offseason to-do lists for AL East teams

Offseason to-do lists for AL East teams
The Cleveland Indians haven't won a World Series since 1948 and it's going to stay that way for at least another year. The Cubs beat the Indians 8-7 in 10 innings in Game 7 of the World Series. Interesting that the Cleveland Cavaliers came back from a 3-1 deficit to win the NBA championship last June, but the Indians blew a 3-1 lead in the World Series. The Indians, who lost Game 7 of the 1997 World Series in extra innings to the Marlins, have three key free agents - Mike Napoli, Raijai...

Showalter on Gausman, Trumbo on No. 40 and more clubhouse quotes

Showalter on Gausman, Trumbo on No. 40 and more clubhouse quotes
NEW YORK - Considering that the New York Yankees had torched Orioles pitching for 27 runs on 36 hits the past two days, throwing a shutout this afternoon was a nice upgrade. And, it provided a much-needed Orioles win. Right-hander Kevin Gausman gave up seven hits and fanned nine over seven innings as the Orioles beat the Yankees 5-0 to avoid a sweep and record their fifth shutout. Gausman improved to 6-10 with a 3.73 ERA and has thrown 13 scoreless his past two starts. He is 1-1 with an ERA of...

Davis on blowout losses, Hunter on O's reunion (O's win, 5-0)

Davis on blowout losses, Hunter on O's reunion (O's win, 5-0)
NEW YORK - The Orioles have suffered two blowout losses at Yankee Stadium the last two days. While all losses count the same, they may not feel the same. Orioles first baseman Chris Davis seemed to agree with that sentiment when I asked him this morning about the recent run of blowout losses. "We don't like it," Davis said. "It is one thing to get beat and it's one thing to kind of get your face rubbed in it. It can be something that really unites a team and ignites a fire. I think with...

Orioles sign Tommy Hunter, recall Oliver Drake (updated)

Orioles sign Tommy Hunter, recall Oliver Drake (updated)
The Orioles added two more pitchers to the active roster today, including Tommy Hunter, their former set-up man and closer who signed as a free agent after the Indians released him last week. Oliver Drake has been recalled from Triple-A Norfolk, the latest changes to a bullpen that's stayed busy in New York. The lineup card no longer lists left-hander T.J. McFarland, who apparently has been optioned, and outfielder Julio Borbon, who's out of options and must have been designated for...

O's blog: Orioles look to salvage series finale at Yankee Stadium
NEW YORK - Orioles right-hander Kevin Gausman is out to end a long streak of unsuccessful outings on the road. Gausman is winless in his last 25 road starts. His last win away from Camden Yards was on Aug. 17, 2014 at Cleveland. In his 25 road starts since, Gausman is 0-16 with an ERA of 5.55. This season, Gausman has looked very different on the home and on the road. In 10 starts at Oriole Park, he is 5-1 with a 2.48 ERA. In 13 road starts, he is 0-9 with a 5.32 ERA and .296 batting average...

Gausman vs. Sabathia today in the Bronx

Gausman vs. Sabathia today in the Bronx
Should your main concerns rest upon a rotation that's surrendered 12 earned runs and 13 hits over 5 1/3 innings in the first two games in the Bronx? Or should it be the bullpen with the revolving door and the sudden inability to cover for the rotation? T.J. McFarland, Mychal Givens, Donnie Hart and Brad Brach combined yesterday to allow eight earned runs and 11 hits in four innings. Or should it be center fielder Adam Jones, who remains day-to-day with a strained left hamstring, while Chris...
