Teagarden clears waivers, and other notes

Catcher Taylor Teagarden has cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Norfolk. The Orioles designated Teagarden for assignment over the weekend in New York to create a 40-man roster spot for catcher Chris Snyder. Norfolk's season is over, but Teagarden could report to the minor league complex in Sarasota and participate in the instructional league. It's also possible that the Orioles decide to select his contract later this month and bring him back to the major league club, though they would have to make room on the 40-man roster. Teagarden batted .167/.180/.300 with two homers and five RBIs in 23 games this season. Also, Zach Britton could pitch Sunday for short-season Single-A Aberdeen in the New York-Penn League playoffs. Otherwise, he would be available if the IronBirds advance to the next round. Manager Buck Showalter said the Orioles want to get the "bad taste" out of Britton's mouth after he allowed four runs in 2 1/3 innings last night in Cleveland. Showalter left open the possibility that Britton could rejoin the club later this month. Jason Hammel, activated from the disabled list today, won't be available to pitch before Saturday. He's listed among the relievers, along with Steve Johnson, who was recalled today. Showalter spoke to Nick Markakis on the flight home last night about his plans to exclude the right fielder from tonight's lineup. Showalter wants Markakis to relax and take the night off. Stay out of the video room and clear his head. Steve Pearce, on the disabled list with a sore left wrist, could swing a bat in the next few days. He's eligible to return on Sept. 12. The Orioles need to draw 9,711 fans tonight to reach two million in attendance for the second consecutive season and the 24th in club history. Will it happen with the Ravens opening their season tonight in Denver and country music singer Keith Urban performing at the Inner Harbor?
