In an attempt to get his 2019 season trending up, Orioles right-hander Dylan Bundy went through the Oakland A's lineup easily through three innings today. He fanned five without allowing a hit on 44 pitches. He was rolling.
But it suddenly went south from there.
Bundy allowed four homers over the next three innings as Oakland beat the Orioles 8-5 at Camden Yards to take three of four in this series.
The Orioles have lost three straight and are 1-7 since a 4-1 start. They take a 5-8 record on the road now, beginning a series in Boston Friday night.
Khris Davis hit two homers last night and added two more today. He hit a two-run shot in the fourth and solo blast at 110 mph in the sixth. Josh Phegley, Kendrys Morales and Marcus Semien also went deep. Morales hit No. 1 to follow Davis in the sixth as the A's went back-to-back. Davis produced his 24th multi-homer game.
The Orioles had taken a brief 1-0 lead in the home first on a long homer by Dwight Smith Jr. He connected off A's right-hander Aaron Brooks and drove a 1-1 fastball 440 feet, deep into the stands in right center. It was his first O's home run.
The Orioles lost the last three games of this series by a combined 31-10 score. During a homestand when they went 1-6, their pitchers allowed 28 homers and 64 runs.
Oakland hit five homers in each of the last two games of this series. The last team to hit five or more in back-to-back games was the Orioles, on Aug. 18-19, 2016 versus Houston.
The Orioles scored four times in the seventh to pull within 7-5. Pedro Severino was hit on the helmet with the bases loaded by J.B. Wendelken to force in a run. Then Wendelken's wild pitch scored another to make it a 7-3 game. Two more runs scored on a Cedric Mullins' groundout and Smith's double to right for a two-RBI game.
The rally proved to be too little, too late.
Now the Birds are off on a two-city, seven-game road trip that begins Friday night in Boston. Right-hander David Hess (1-1, 2.70 ERA) faces lefty Eduardo Rodriguez (0-2, 12.38 ERA) at 7:10 p.m.
