The defense rests in the first inning (updated)

BOSTON - The Orioles no longer have three errors this season. And I'm no longer welcome in manager Buck Showalter's office. Kidding. He doesn't really believe in jinxes. Right? Jonathan Schoop mishandled Mike Napoli's grounder with runners on the corners and one out in the bottom of the first inning, and Dustin Pedroia crossed the plate with the tying run. Schoop was most likely thinking about a double play, especially with David Ortiz lumbering to second base. The Orioles now have four errors this season, three by Schoop at third base. Napoli was credited with an RBI, since you can't assume a double play. Schoop can't take all the blame for Boston scoring in the first. Bud Norris walked Pedroia on eight pitches, and Ortiz singled off the Green Monster on an 0-2 pitch. Norris retired the side in order in the second, striking out David Ross and Brock Holt. The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Nick Markakis led off with a walk, stole his first base of the season and scored on Nelson Cruz's two-out single. Cruz is tied with Matt Wieters for the team lead with 10 RBIs, and he needs one more for 500 in his career. Markakis is 1-for-2 today and 7-for-15 lifetime against Boston left-hander Felix Doubront. Adam Jones worked Doubront for a seven-pitch walk in between strikeouts by Delmon Young and Chris Davis. Jones has four walks this year after drawing 25 in 2013. The Orioles turned the tables on the Red Sox, working Doubront for 29 pitches in the first. The spikes were on the other foot. However, he threw only 11 in the second and nine in the third. He's retired seven in a row. Update: Ortiz homered with the count full leading off the bottom of the fourth to give Boston a 2-1 lead. Norris has thrown 72 pitches in five innings. Chris Davis is 0-for-2 today and 5-for-33 with one home run, three RBIs and 11 strikeouts in his last eight games. Doubront retired 13 in a row before Markakis' leadoff single in the sixth.
