Tomlin: "Strasburg will make a name for himself"

Harrisburg Senators pitching coach Randy Tomlin took some time after batting practice Thursday to talk about Stephen Strasburg as he gets ready for his second start of the season. Strasburg was impressive last Sunday, going 5 innings, allowing 1 unearned run and striking out 8 Altoona Curve batters in a 6-4 win. We talked about Strasburg getting into a rhythm last week, is that again what you would like to see in his next outing? "Yes, we want him to get into a rhythm. Stephen was a little anxious last Sunday because he hadn't thrown in awhile. He was really strong because it had been a long time since he had faced hitters. We want him to get into a consistent routine. He was really pumped up." Talk about the different pitches in Strasburg's arsenal: "Stephen has several pitches under his belt. Of course his fastball is locating well. But he is not just his fastball. His curveball is outstanding. It has great depth and has late action. His change up has good arm action." Is there a pitcher you remember that Strasburg reminds you of? I can't really compare him to anyone of the past. Maybe Nolan Ryan because of the fastball but Stephen has a better feel for his changeup. Strasburg will really make a name for himself." Still looking to monitor his pitch count, and who will catch him? "We are still looking at 80 to 85 pitches for his second start. Randy Knorr hasn't decided if Jhonatan Solano will catch him again." The whole staff looks very good so far, right? You have to be pleased with the way they are working: "All of our pitchers are doing a great job. Jeff Mandel, Aaron Thompson, Erik Arnesen, Drew Storen and Strasburg are pitching very well. Storen goes right at the hitters. Mandel just pitched a great game. We have a great group of guys this year. All twelve guys can pitch in the big leagues."
