Trumbo and Schoop on the offense, Miley on his outing

In the seven games that preceeded Wednesday's game, the Orioles scored 15 total runs and were shut out twice. The last two nights they've bashed six homers, scoring 17 runs in back-to-back wins over the Yankees and Red Sox.

The Orioles hit four homers tonight off former O's farmhand Eduardo Rodriguez as they bashed their way to a 7-5 win in the series opener against Boston.

Mark Trumbo's two-run homer in the first off a 93 mph Rodriguez fastball got the bashing started and provided Wade Miley an early lead. Trumbo began the game 0-for-14 against Rodriguez.

"It definitely helped," Trumbo said. "It's a pitcher we struggled with in the past, and I think tonight was a good night to make some adjustments on our end and get a few runs for him. Yeah, it looks better recently (for the lineup). The first month or so, pretty inconsistent, but the recent results have kind of been what we're looking for."

Last June, the Orioles hit 56 home runs, which is a major league record for June. They start the month off with four tonight.

"It kind of reminds me of last year a lot," Trumbo said of the homer-happy night. "We obviously did pretty well. When everyone is kind of in a good place, that's the kind of offense you're going to see."

Trumbo's early homer was followed by a Chris Davis solo shot in the fourth for a 3-1 lead. Later, Jonathan Schoop's three-run shot in the sixth made it a 7-1 lead and it stayed a blowout until Boston scored four in the ninth.

Rodriguez began the game with a career 1.34 ERA in six starts at Camden Yards against his former organization. Amazingly, in his past three starts in Baltimore, he took no-hitters through the fourth inning each time. But tonight was very different.

Schoop-Swings-White-Sidebar.jpg"We know he likes his fastball and attacks the zone," Schoop said. "He left a couple of pitches right in the middle today. He made mistakes and we made him pay for them."

Meanwhile on the mound for the Orioles, Miley was holding a Boston offense that was scoring 6.2 runs per game over the past 23 games in check. Boston was 8-2 its last 10 games before this series opener.

Miley gave up a second-inning run but nothing else over seven innings, allowing five hits. He improved to 2-3 with an ERA of 2.82. In six starts against the Amerucab League East, he is 2-2 with a 1.95 ERA.

Miley walked just one batter and was asked if he liked that stat or getting deeper in the game more. He had gone five innings or less in five of his past six starts.

"Definitely getting deeper in the game. I'm not overly concerned about the walks," he said. "Obviously, I don't want to walk people. But at the same time, if I had walked seven guys tonight and got to the seventh inning, whatever. You know? You want to minimize them, but at the same time, I was just trying to get as deep in the game as possible. They were pretty aggressive tonight and obviously the offense, we jumped on theme pretty early and then we kept applying pressure.

"Mookie Betts leading off the game, he hit a home run, but (Adam) Jonesy made a great play out there. Who knows where this game's at right now if that ball's two feet farther. Who knows? Fortunately, it worked out for us."

The Orioles are 28-24 for the season, 18-8 at home and 13-5 at home in AL East games. They are 9-1 in home series openers.

They hit four homers tonight for the fourth time. They are 4-0 in those games. They have one five-homer game on April 12 at Boston, winning that game, too.
