Tyler Wilson is staying in O's rotation (plus other pregame notes)

KANSAS CITY - Orioles manager Buck Showalter confirmed today that right-hander Tyler Wilson is staying in the rotation - at least for now. He will start for the Orioles on Thursday at home against the Chicago White Sox.

Wilson pitched five innings, allowing six hits and three runs, and got the win last night at Kauffman Stadium. He is 1-0 with an ERA of 2.70 in four appearances. Vance Worley will continue to pitch out of the bullpen.

The Orioles will need to make another roster move to activate Kevin Gausman to pitch Monday night against Tampa Bay.

O's right-hander Yovani Gallardo is getting an MRI on his right shoulder today. Showalter said that might have been happening about the exact time he was meeting reporters in his office earlier today.

Showalter said again that the Orioles are hopeful that Gallardo might not out that long, but it is way too soon to have any thoughts on a timetable for his recovery.

Pending the results of today's MRI, Gallardo may rejoin the Orioles in Tampa Bay to begin whatever treatment he will need.

"We're hoping that he has an injection and gets back on the hill shortly," Showalter said. "Kind of like you when go down Gausman's road and Jason Garcia's road. That is what we are hoping happens.

"There is nobody from our personal training staff in Baltimore. I know Richie would like to get hands on him (see him in Tampa) if what we hope happens today happens."

Showalter said shortstop J.J. Hardy is getting an off-day today. Manny Machado is starting at shortstop and Ryan Flaherty will get the start at third base.

Showalter was asked today about outfielder Hyun Soo Kim, who had two hits and his first major league RBI last night. He has five hits in his first 10 major league at-bats.

"This is a guy that walked 100-plus times in Korea last year," Showalter said. "I think he's seeing there is a little more attack mode (from the pitchers) here. He was telling me that about six or seven out of 10 pitches he saw in Korea were breaking balls. It was tough for him initially when guys were really attacking him with a more consistent velocity fastball. But he's smart and he has made some adjustments."

Mike Wright (1-1, 5.73 ERA) gets the start for the Orioles here today. In his last outing against Toronto, it seemed that Wright and catcher Matt Wieters worked at having Wright throw more secondary pitches early in that game to establish a good pitch mix right from the start. Did the O's make a concerted effort to have Wright do that?

"I think the competition dictates that," Showalter said. "Mike has been a guy that, some days, he's there at 94-97 (mph) and the next day he's 89-92. That is what starters go through. You are not always carrying that stuff. Maybe five out of 30 (starts) you are carrying all your bullets. Tyler is not going to carry 92-94 every time out there like he did last night. That was rest and adrenaline."

Showalter was asked in a joking manner this morning if he is concerned about Adam Jones becoming too patient after a three-walk night, the first of his career last night.

"The thing I liked is how proud he was off," Showalter said. "I said, 'Hey, couple more of those days you'll be leading off.' And he'd be OK with it.

"Tell you what, I've never had so many guys on one club that don't really care where they hit in the batting order. People make a big deal out of it, but they don't."

Showalter said Double-A Bowie pitcher Chris Lee had a blister issue toward the end of his start last night, when he pitched six innings and allowed just one run against Harrisburg. Lee is 3-0 with a 2.95 ERA over three games for Bowie.

Voting for the All-Star game begins today. O's Rule 5 pick Joey Rickard is among nine Orioles on the American League ballot. He is joined by Chris Davis, Jonathan Schoop, Hardy, Machado, Wieters, Pedro Alvarez, Jones and Mark Trumbo.
