Updating Britton, Arrieta, Betemit, Markakis and more

BOSTON - Orioles manager Buck Showalter needs a fifth starter on Saturday, but he still hasn't decided who will take the mound. It won't be left-hander Zach Britton, who starts tonight at Triple-A Norfolk. Britton would be working on short rest Saturday. Also, the Orioles want to keep him on the injury-rehab assignment and make sure he's ready to be activated. Showalter said Britton's return isn't "imminent." "He needs to continue to pitch well at the level he's pitching at to be considered to pitch here," Showalter said. "His rehab is until the 25th and we could option him at any time. Nothing really imminent there with him. He's got a lot of roads to cross before we'd consider him. "It'll be interesting to see if he pitches as well as Tommy (Hunter) did there, too. As well as (Chris) Tillman's pitching and (Jason) Berken's pitching." Showalter omitted Brad Bergesen, who's turned in four straight quality starts with the Tides. Showalter said Hunter and Tillman are potential candidates to start Saturday. He also mentioned the possibility of using relievers, including Miguel Gonzalez, to cover nine innings. Showalter confirmed that Jake Arrieta will start Friday night against the Phillies at Camden Yards unless the weather in Boston forces a postponement during this series. Jason Hammel, who had an ice pack on his right knee earlier today, will start Sunday. Wilson Betemit no longer has a fever, but he's bothered by a sore throat. Showalter is hoping that Betemit will return to the lineup tomorrow night. Nick Markakis will have the stitches removed from his right wrist in a week as he continues to progress from surgery to remove a broken piece of hamate bone. Catcher Taylor Teagarden will be cleared to start hitting down at extended spring training. The Orioles are thrilled to have LSU pitcher Kevin Gausman, chosen with the fourth-overall pick in the First-Year Player Draft, but they also coveted shortstop Carlos Correa of the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy. "Somebody said he wouldn't have been taken in the first seven (picks). That's wrong," Showalter said. "He was going to go in the first four picks. I can tell you that." As for Gausman, Showalter talked about the right-hander's makeup being "off the charts" and how he possesses a changeup that already would play in the majors. "We did our homework," Showalter said. Asked if he would keep a box of mini powdered donuts in the dugout for Gausman, Showalter smiled and replied, "We'll run that past Brady (Anderson). I'm not sure how that's going to work. We're just now getting to the point where we can get cheese on the plane." In the 10th round today, the Orioles selected shortstop Joel Hutter from Dallas Baptist University. Dontrelle Willis threw three innings today at extended spring training.
