Updating Wright and Hardy and wrapping up a 7-1 win

Reliever Wesley Wright will undergo an MRI on Monday after being placed on the disabled list today with a strained left trapezius muscle. Wright will head to Sarasota to begin rehabbing from the injury "unless something comes up in the MRI that we weren't expecting," said manger Buck Showalter.

Shortstop J.J. Hardy could report to Double-A Bowie once the Baysox are home beginning Thursday. He won't travel with the Orioles to Boston "If things progress like they're progressing," Showalter said.

hardy-fielding-gray-sidebar.jpg"I was talking to him in the dugout tonight trying to get a feel," Showalter said. "I'm thinking Bowie. They have a really good infield. And they'll be home about the time we hope he's ready to play some games. That will work out good. He can work out of this locker room."

Showalter had plenty to say about Ubaldo Jimenez following tonight's 7-1 win over the Blue Jays. Jimenez tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing only two baserunners and striking out eight.

Jimenez averaged 5.5 walks per nine innings last season. He walked one batter tonight.

"That's as good as we've seen him," Showalter said. "He's pitched some good games for us, but that was pretty crisp. Lot of strike ones, lot of things in his repertoire. Good lineup over there. Pretty impressive.

"He'll be the first to tell you there are a lot of challenges ahead of us, but it's a good start of the season for him. Glad we got the ball in his hand in one of our first five games. If you've got any type of heart or feelings at all, you know how much it means for him to contribute. He did some last year, but it was very obvious early in the spring that he came into this for the right reasons. He wants to contribute to a good club. He likes the commitment his teammates and everybody have made to him.

"Nobody worked harder than him. You can tell he did it in the offseason, too. He came in here with a real purpose. Tonight was a good reminder why he's been a good quality major league starter for a long time.

"I thought it set up well for him. I thought about it when I went home last night. I thought tonight, if he was where we thought he was, he should give us a chance to win. I think he would have pitched that way regardless of the score. He pitched like it was 1-0."

Jimenez was blowing a 90 mph fastball past fastball hitters, his deception a big part of his success.

"I had a couple people said he had a lot of movement, a lot of late life," Showalter said. "It's like golf. You play the fade, you get in a groove and get it to land where you want it to. Split was there for him, breaking ball, doubled up on some pitches, which tells you a pitcher is pretty confident when he'll throw a pitch and then come right back and throw it again even if he misses. A lot of things were a challenge for him.

jimenez-pitching-orange-home-sidebar.jpg"Everybody pulls for him. He's a likeable young man. In a lot of years past, what he was doing last year would have been OK. Keep that in mind. He's trying to pitch at a level that will allow us to play when the leaves start turning. I'm really proud and happy for him tonight.

"I was going to let him get an out or two and then go get him. I was trying to keep him under 100, see if he could get a nice response, but he wouldn't give me a chance. He wanted no part of coming out of the game in the sixth inning either."

Showalter could have skipped his fifth starter with the off-days this month, but he wanted the ball in Jimenez's hands following a strong spring.

"Actually, tonight I didn't want to take him much past 90, let alone 100, but with the extra day, he's going to get next time out...," Showalter said. "It's going to be where five or six or seven starters are going to have to contribute for us to get where we want to get. We've got to give them the ball. They've got to go out there and pitch. That's why Zach (Britton) pitched tonight and why Darren (O'Day) is going to pitch tomorrow and why Tommy (Hunter) was going to pitch regardless. We've got to keep them in a certain consistent pattern.

"I think skipping around and doing a lot of that stuff, I've seen it done and I just know through the years it's not good for pitchers to do it that way. We all spent a lot of time here trying to put ourselves in their mind and their body, just to feel what they feel. Pitching is hard. It's real hard when you're not pitching and you're waiting and waiting and waiting, and the anxiety that develops through that. I want to give him as quick an opportunity as possible to get him going.

"It's not a fifth starter, fourth starter, third starter. Just where it fit. He pitched our first game down there and we wanted to get the ball in his hand just as many times as he could in spring training. And tonight we got a good return."

schoop-after-grand-slam-orange-sidebar.jpgJonathan Schoop hit his first career grand slam and his second home run in two games.

"Jon's got a very infectious smile and personality," Showalter said. "He doesn't take himself too seriously, almost to a fault sometimes. He listens to the right people here, but he also listens to everybody. If you went up to him and talked to him about his hand position on a double play turn or something, he'll listen to you. That's why you like him.

"Jon wants to be the best he can be and he realizes that he's learning every day. We all know what he's capable of and that ball makes a little different sound off his bat than a lot of people when he squares it up."

Chris Davis homered to left-center field, as he did so many times in 2013.

"It's a long way to hit a ball for a left-handed hitter," Showalter said. "That was a good swing. His last game I thought he had a couple really good at-bats against a very good pitcher and he's had good at-bats here, so hopefully that bodes well for him. I know he and Cooly (Scott Coolbaugh) have a good feel for where he is right now."
