Wade Miley on his debut, Hyun Soo Kim on his first Oriole Park homer

New Orioles left-hander Wade Miley said he should be fine after taking a comebacker off his lower leg to end his outing tonight. Rougned Odor's hot smash up the middle deflected off Miley and toward second baseman Jonathan Schoop, who threw Odor out to end the top of the fifth inning.

"It is on the (left) lower calf," Miley said. "It tightened up a little bit. But it's going to be fine. Not a big concern at all. Just one of those things. I'm glad it hit me. It would have been one more run if it wouldn't have hit me, so it worked out good. It just got really tight. But after I walked it off a bit, it kind of released and hasn't bothered me since."

Miley-Throws-White-Sidebar.jpgMiley was scored on in three of his five innings tonight, allowing eight hits and four runs as the Orioles lost to Texas 5-3. The Rangers ended the Orioles' three-game win streak and avoided getting swept three straight. Miley fanned five without a walk, throwing 91 pitches. But he said some of them just didn't go where he intended.

"I didn't have very good command at all," Miley said. "Had to battle to make some pitches. Tough luck in the fifth inning. It happens, it's baseball. Overall, it's not exactly how I wanted to go out and throw. But you are not going to throw your best every time out. Something to build on and get the first one out of the way.

"(Catcher Matt) Wieters did a great job. We talked about it before the game. Had a plan. We had to go off track a little bit because I wasn't commanding the fastball, so we threw more off-speed than normal."

This was Miley's fourth outing of this season against the Rangers and his third loss. He falls to 0-3 with an ERA of 7.36 against Texas.

"They've gotten me pretty good throughout this year. It's a good lineup over there and good team they've put together," he said.

Now Miley looks to move on from the attention that his first O's start got and begin to settle in with his new team. He is glad his debut is out of the way.

"Yeah, it's pretty important (to get past that)," he said. "Obviously wish the results would have been better. I had some jitters. After the first inning, everything kind of went away. But I just really didn't have good command tonight.

"I'm getting to know these guys, great group of guys over here. Just want to do my part. Just give us a chance every five days. That's what I'm looking forward to."

The Orioles hit four solo homers in their win here on Tuesday and added three solo homers tonight. That included the first by Hyun Soo Kim at Oriole Park.

"It would have been much better if that home run had actually brought us a win," Kim said through interpreter Danny Lee. "It wasn't our win today and it didn't really mean that much."

A reporter asked Kim if he looked to be more aggressive in the third at-bat when he homered after being called out twice on strikes, once in the first inning on a pitch that looked off the plate.

"I did try to be aggressive on the third at-bat," he said. "I wasn't quite sure if that was a strike on the first strikeout, but I agree on the second one. Just tried to be as aggressive as possible and get after it."

Kim was asked if the seven homers in the series is a sign the Orioles offense is starting to get going.

"We've always had a great offense," Kim said. "It is hard to say if I'm the one to judge if our offense is going or not. Because we are already a good offensive team, we'll pick it up and get going."

Kim tonight played against fellow South Korean player Shin-soo Choo.

"I did imagine that I could play with Choo in the major leagues. It was a great experience today and I enjoyed it," Kim said.

Kim extended his hitting streak to a career-high seven games tonight, and he is 9-for-24 (.375) with three walks, three runs, a homer and an RBI during that streak. Mark Trumbo hit his 31st homer tonight. He began tonight tied with Todd Frazier of the Chicago White Sox for the major league lead. Pedro Alvarez hit his 16th homer tonight. Since July 3, he is batting .324 (23-for-71) with four doubles, seven homers and 10 RBIs.
