Wondering where Casilla would fit in the lineup

Did everyone fall back this morning? I woke up unsure whether the times on my iPhone and laptop were correct, which led me downstairs to check the clock on my stove. Exciting life I lead, isn't it? The Orioles now have 16 arbitration-eligible players with Friday's acquisition of second baseman Alexi Casilla. They already led the majors before claiming Casilla off waivers. Now they're just piling on. Casilla made $1.382 million in 2012 and he's going to get another raise. It won't be a huge increase, but he'll get a nice bump. Casilla gives executive vice president Dan Duquette the desired defense and base-stealing ability, but not the on-base percentage - .282 this season, .305 in Casilla's major league career. Nine of Casilla's 11 career home runs have come from the left side of the plate, where he's batting .247/.308/.341. From the right side, he's batting .259/.299/.322. If the past is any indication, Casilla will get off to a slow start. He's a career .214/.254/.256 hitter in 84 April games, the lowest numbers for any month. Where would Casilla fit into the Orioles' lineup? Most of his at-bats have come in the second slot, where he's hitting .252/.313/.340 in 219 career games. He's batting .248/.296/.331 in 161 games in the ninth slot. He's batted leadoff in 34 games, hitting .232/.265/.304. Without knowing the other moves that Duquette will make this winter, I'll predict that Casilla bats ninth if he's the starting second baseman on opening day. Nate McLouth could bat leadoff if he re-signs with the Orioles. Otherwise, Nick Markakis could return to the top spot. What happens if Brian Roberts is healthy when the Orioles break camp? Casilla becomes a utility infielder, eliminating the need for Robert Andino? Casilla is a career .349/.438/.429 hitter in 25 games against the Yankees. Makes no sense. Does anyone remember how the Twins optioned Casilla to Triple-A Rochester back in 2009 before a two-game series at Camden Yards? Manager Ron Gardenhire cited Casilla's lack of hustle, which he believed was a product of the second baseman's slump. "He's just mentally a wreck right now as far as being able to play the game," Gardenhire told reporters. "He's got too many things going on." The Twins acquired Casilla from the Angels on Dec. 9, 2005 for reliever J.C. Romero. Romero appeared in five games for the Orioles this season. Small baseball world.
