World Series game blog: Mets host Royals with a chance to even series

After a 9-3 victory on Friday night, the New York Mets can even the World Series at two wins each with a victory tonight at Citi Field against the Kansas City Royals.

After being held to five runs and 13 hits in the first two games, New York produced nine runs on 12 hits last night. David Wright went 2-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs. Curtis Granderson went 2-for-5 with a homer, three runs scored and two RBIs. Wright and Rusty Staub are the only Mets players to have at least four RBIs in a World Series game.

Kansas City took a 3-2 lead in the second inning before New York scored the game's last seven runs with two in the third, one in the fourth and four in the sixth inning.

The Mets last won the World Series in 1986 in seven games over Boston. They trailed 2-0 in that series, as they did in this one until last night's victory. The last team to overcome 2-0 deficit to win the World Series was the 1996 Yankees against the Braves. The Mets are now averaging 6.2 runs per game at home this postseason and that is the best of any team. AL teams are now 8-18 in NL parks during the WS since 2006.

On the mound tonight, Kansas City's 36-year-old right-hander, Chris Young (11-6, 3.06 ERA), faces the Mets' 24-year-old rookie left-hander, Steven Matz (4-0, 2.27 ERA).

In three postseason games, Young is 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA. He was the Game 1 winner when he threw three no-hit innings on 53 pitches. The 6-foot-10 Princeton product went 5-9 in 24 starts for the Mets from 2011-12. In two playoff starts, Matz is 0-1 with an ERA of 3.72. Over 9 2/3 innings, he has allowed 10 hits and four runs with four walks and eight strikeouts.
