Zach Davies done in fourth inning (O's, Rays tie 6-6)

Recap: Zach Davies allowed one run and five hits in 3 1/3 innings, with two walks and four strikeouts. Evan Longoria led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run off Davies. Mychal Givens struck out two batters to strand two inherited runners. Alejandro De Aza had an RBI triple in the third to cap a four-run inning. Jonathan Schoop had an RBI double in the inning. Delmon Young drove in a run in the first inning with an infield hit. The Rays scored two runs off Rule 5 pick Logan Verrett in the fifth. He had allowed two runs over 12 spring innings. Tommy Hunter retired the Rays in order with two strikeouts in the seventh. Ryan Webb did the same in the eighth. But Wesley Wright surrendered a game-tying three-run homer to Joey Butler with two outs in the ninth.

Need to know: Davies threw 64 pitches, 35 for strikes. De Aza, starting in center field, threw out Curt Casali trying to stretch a single into a double. The Orioles had five infield hits in the first five innings, including two by Young. Nolan Reimold drew his eighth walk of the spring in the first inning. Everth Cabrera had three hits and reached on an error. Verrett had walked only one batter before issuing a free pass to Brandon Guyer. No walks in seven straight appearances. Hunter had allowed six runs and seven hits in his last three appearances over 3 2/3 innings. Webb has struck out four of the last six batters he's faced over two appearances. Wright allowed two hits and walked two in the ninth, with the three earned runs in the frame inflating his spring ERA to 4.09.

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Zach Davies pitched into the fourth inning today against the Rays and left with a 5-1 lead.

The only run off Davies in 3 1/3 innings came on Evan Longoria's leadoff homer in the fourth. Desmond Jennings doubled with one out and David DeJesus walked, bringing manager Buck Showalter to the mound and sidearmer Mychal Givens into the game.

Givens, the former shortstop, struck out Logan Forsythe and Curt Casali to end the inning and complete Davies' line.

Davies allowed five hits, walked two and struck out four. He threw 64 pitches, 35 for strikes.

Rule 5 pick Logan Verrett is working the bottom of the fifth.

de-aza-fist-bump-gray-sidebar.jpgAlejandro De Aza had himself quite a day in a rare start in center field. He delivered an RBI triple in the third inning, threw out Casali trying to stretch a single into a double and stroked an RBI single in the fifth to give the Orioles a 6-1 lead.

Julio Borbon pinch-ran for De Aza, who was batting .189 before today.

De Aza becomes more important to the Orioles with David Lough expected to land on the disabled list.

Third baseman Manny Machado will host his second annual "Manny Machado BaseBOWL Tournament" on Monday, May 18th at Mustang Alley.

Last year's inaugural event raised over $80,000 for the Play Baseball summer youth program, supported by the Baltimore City Foundation.

This year's event will take place from 4-7 p.m. and consist of two games made up of teams with five bowlers. Each team will be paired up with a celebrity participant.

Several athletes from the local sports community are expected to be in attendance. A few notable celebrity participants last year included Showalter, vice president of baseball operations Brady Anderson, Chris Tillman, J.J. Hardy, Steve Pearce, Jonathan Schoop, Bud Norris and Miguel Gonzalez.

A silent auction featuring signed sports memorabilia and other unique items will be available for bidding throughout the event.

Sponsorships range from $2,500 to $25,000 with all proceeds benefiting the Baltimore City Foundation, a 501c3 organization which supports Baltimore City Recreation and Parks' Play Baseball summer program for children ages 9-12.

Update: Verrett gave up two runs in the fifth, equaling his total in his first 12 spring innings.

Longoria had a sacrifice fly, following by James Loney's RBI single. Nolan Reimold, who drew his eighth spring walk and had an infield hit earlier in the game, committed an error in left field on Asdrubal Cabrera's single.

Update II: Tommy Hunter retired the Rays in order in the seventh and struck out two batters. Ryan Webb did the same in the eighth, and the Orioles continue to lead 6-3.

Hunter had allowed six runs and seven hits in his last three outings over 3 2/3 innings. Webb has struck out four of the last six batters that he's faced in two games.
