Monday night, right-hander Zach Davies had a strong start for Double-A Bowie. He went seven innings at Richmond allowing four hits and two runs with five walks and 10 strikeouts.
But today he finds himself back on the disabled list for the second time this year.
The 21-year-old Davies is dealing with shoulder tendinitis. At this point the issue doesn't appear serious and the Orioles feel like he won't be out long.
"He feels much today than he did yesterday, but he will miss a start," O's director of player development Brian Graham said. "We'll back him off a few days, give him some rest and get him back in the rotation.
"The next day (after his last start) he felt discomfort and then when he threw his bullpen the following day there was some discomfort. But he should not miss much time. With young pitchers you want to be careful and err on the side of caution."
Davies, the club's 11th-ranked prospect according to Baseball America, made his first trip to the DL in the middle of April. He left his start in the second inning at Akron on April 12 when he took a line drive off his right forearm, very close to his pitching elbow.
He returned from that to give up three earned runs over 11 innings in his past two starts before today's news. On the year, over four Bowie starts, Davies is 1-1 with a 3.12 ERA.
"We anticipate this being a short-term DL stint," Graham said.
Meanwhile Bowie left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez should throw a bullpen session next week as he makes his way back to the Baysox rotation. The 21-year-old lefty has a sprained knee and has been taking part in a throwing progression in Sarasota, Fla.
The Orioles' No. 3 prospect, Rodriguez came up with the injury between his starts while weightlifting April 17 and he's also on Bowie's disabled list.
Rodriguez is 1-2 with a 6.75 ERA in three starts this year. Over 16 innings, he's allowed 19 hits with five walks and 12 strikeouts.
