BRADENTON, Fla. - The Orioles scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning today and trail the Pirates 6-5 at LECOM Park.
Paul Janish and Rule 5 pick Aneury Tavárez had RBI singles and two more runs scored on a throwing error by second baseman Chris Bostick on Trey Mancini's ground ball with the bases loaded.
Ubaldo Jiménez allowed one run before leaving the game with two outs in the fifth, but he was charged with two more after Zach Stewart replaced him. Stewart hadn't allowed a run in his first five appearances over 8 2/3 innings, but he surrendered an RBI double to David Freese and grand slam to Phil Gosselin.
No Orioles starter had retired a batter in the fourth inning before today.
"I felt good, throwing 75 pitches and getting to the fifth inning," Jiménez said. "That's what you want to do. Keep getting the pitches up. So that's good."
The bad part involved the five walks, including two in the fifth. He lost Jose Osuna with two outs and manager Buck Showalter popped out of the dugout.
"I think I was throwing too many breaking balls when I was behind in the count, something you want to work on in order to get your breaking balls ready for the season," Jiménez said. "Two of those walks that I got were on fastballs and the other three were with breaking balls behind the count, 3-2 pitches. I wanted to get my breaking balls down and I couldn't. I was working on that.
"At the beginning of the game, it was good. I was able to throw my curve. My slider was good, but I still need to get my split (going), especially like a 3-2 pitch. That's something I need to do in those situations. That's pretty much why I was throwing it when I was behind in the count. "
Jiménez pitched into the fourth inning in his last start against the Red Sox and faced one batter without recording an out.
"It felt good to be able to go out beyond that," he said.
Pedro Ãlvarez, in his first game since rejoining the Orioles, is 0-for-4 with two strikeouts as the designated hitter. He also popped up and flied to right field.
The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Chris Dickerson's leadoff single and stolen base, and ground balls by Johnny Giavotella and Chris Davis.
